Getting screwed into single exhaust. Cheapest way to sound louder

    Hi All,

So my lease is up on my 2016 Platinum today. It's the first and last vehicle I'll ever lease because it's a complete ripoff. Buying a used 2016 SR-5 TRD w/ Single exhaust tonight to replace it. Not happy about it but I'm not paying $600+ a month for a Platinum lease buyout.

Anyway, my platinum has the TRD dual-exhaust system and sounds great. The one I am getting tonight has single exhaust and probably sounds like a mouse. I'm not going to be able to afford to have them add the TRD exhaust system onto it, so naturally the solution in my mind is make it twice as loud as TRD but with one exhaust pipe for cheaper after market. Wife thinks I'm being an ass about it. Probably, but whatever.

Anyway, I've seen the BAMuffler's and they seem to be the most recommended, but I'm not a fan of the price at $750-$950. So I am wondering if anyone has any cheaper recommendations that don't involve just taking the whole muffler off.

    Any recommendations are appreciated.

I would drive it as is and save up a bit to get something that will last you.

You say "probably sounds like a mouse" does that mean you dont know what it sounds like or you think a mouse sounds like that?

I saved a month to buy my new speakers and amp which was 2500.00.
I didnt want to go with the cheaper so thought I would wait a bit to buy it.

I'm admittedly being a little bit salty about the whole thing, but I can tell you my father has a 2016 SR-5 with single exhaust and no TRD anywhere and when I drive his, it certainly doesn't sound like 5.7 liters to me.

Why don't you swap exhausts before turning in the lease?

I don't think you can go wrong with Keith's stuff. I might buy something from him in the future. I did go cheap on my single exhaust. I did the MBRP for less than $300 and I get compliments on it all the time. Even from TRD exhaust Tundras I've meet. Sound. I love the sound. It does drone but I don't mind it unless you're pulling a long hill towing a heavy trailer.

You Sir, might have hit the jackpot. I will ask them to do that and see what happens. The salesmen tells me its not just the exhaust, but that they have to tune the engine to get the deep growl, so it's more than just the exhaust. Is that BS?

Also, better watch that they don't change the deal on you. If it came with the TRD exhaust there is no way they are going let that money slip away for nothing.

What was the difference in price of buying out your platinum and the used SR5 you're buying?

I pay $480 a month on the lease for my Platinum. They want $606 a month for me to buy it out.

The SR-5 is the same year, and has about the same mileage on it, but has significantly less features on it. We haven't agreed on a price yet but I'm not paying more than $530 a month for it. Ideally I am hoping to get it for close to my lease payment.

Gotcha. MBRP sounds just as good as TRD you said? Even with single exhaust?

Any idea what the cost of labor is if I have a shop do it?

Without some "boot", I doubt you get that for even a SR5 with low miles. If you do, it'll be a long buy. They're going 72 to 80 months on them now. Hard to swallow for me.

Sound is subjective. I can't say myself. I personally think the TRD is too quit unless you really get into it. Then you hear as much engine noise as exhaust noise... but that is just me.

    My theory is this:

If I can buy my 2016 Platinum with 36,000 miles on it for $606 a month at 72 months financing, they need to do a lot better for me to downgrade to an SR-5 of the same year with comparable mileage on it. He quoted me $581 a month for the SR-5, but that's at 7.39% APR ---> Way too high, and he won't take my word for it that my credit is excellent, so he is running it as fair. I said, "Why would I do that? I can spend $25 more a month and buy out my Platinum." He said, well we need to run your credit so you need to come in if you want a better deal.

At the end of the day I am expecting to get it for about $520 a month. Disgusted that I'll be paying $40 more a month for less, but at least I'll own it now and won't have to deal with the BS again in 3 years.

As for the sound - for me, my favorite of TRD is what I think you guys call the drone ---> Going up a hill in first gear on the brink of 2nd gear. The super deep bellow, is my favorite. Sounds good when it starts too and when I gun the pedal but my favorite is that deep droning bellow.

What interest rate are they quoting you to buy out your lease? Rates are always lower on new trucks and tundras tend to hold their value well so used trucks aren’t always the best deal. If your credit is really excellent, why not look at buying new?

    KnuckleHD,

4.60% for 72 months for the lease buyout. Credit is 782.

I looked into buying new as well, but the lowest they will go is $679 a month, which definitely ain't happening. Part of the problem is I am only putting $1,000 down. They will lease me a 2019 TRD for $533, but I am so disgusted with leasing after this that I just want to buy something and not have to deal with this again. Live and learn I guess. I thought for sure when I leased it that the buyout monthly payment would be less. Never did I dream it would be significantly higher.

    VTYOTA,

That sounds great. What makes it budget though? When I google 8 inch BAMufflers, I see they are $750-$950.

EDIT: I see. No muffling chamber basically.

Yeah, they are straight pipes. Still have the benefits of added HP and torque. If you don't mind the drone, you can get it with further discounts. Aluminized $325 and Stainless $425 (pricing with discounts and no resonator). Shipped free.

Nice I like those. I like the MBRP catbacks too.

    Decisions decisions.

Any idea what you average truck shop charges in labor to install them?

I'm not sure, but I can't imagine it would be a lot. The BAMuffler is a direct swap. Unbolt the OEM pipes and bolt the BAMuffler on.

I understand your frustration... these trucks are not cheap! I agree that $679 a month is ridiculous. Are you a member of a credit union? Maybe look at getting a loan (lowest rate possible for used vehicle) and purchase private party? If not, I don’t know the best answer.
How long are you looking to keep the truck for? I’m not a fan of leasing but if you’re one to switch trucks every couple of years it may be worth it to just lease a new one. At this point it just comes down to how much you are willing to pay every month and whether or not you really want to own vs lease. Sorry...

I am hopeful we will work something out tonight. Actually, the one I am looking at looks just like yours in your pic. We are members of the credit union by family extension (father in law). My house is through the credit union. Might be worth a call to them.

My plan would be to drive it for about 6 years or so. I like to trade my vehicles in around the 100,000 mile mark, and I'd be buying it with 29,000 on it.

Sounds like getting out of the lease for a bigger payment is a horrible idea.

If you like to trade in your vehicles with 100k miles, then think of your purchase as a 100k lease and do your math again with that perspective.

I’ll bet you’re best off either staying in your current lease or buying a cheaper truck until you can payoff the lease buyout debt

You can do it yourself. Just take 4 bolts loose and hangers. One joint bolt and you're done.

Problem is, the 3 year lease monthly payment is $480. I can afford that. The lease buyout monthly payment is $606. I cannot afford that and it's ridiculous. With only $1,000 down, there's no way I'm getting into even a used Tundra for under $500. I've made peace with that, but I certainly am not paying $606 a month for a truck. Once I turn in my truck, I have no debt to worry about with it, so all I need to do is get into one I can buy and I should be good.

Option C is turn the truck in and drive my wife's minivan for about a year.

You only have a year to go. I’d just finish it out. Buying it out is going to cost you almost the same
