Why I am seeing doubles on my HUD. It is set to the highest setting but I am also seeing doubles on lower setting. It is not crisp looking. Anything I need to do to fix this? Is it because the windshield ceramic tint that I installed? Many others have ceramic tint but no ghosting effect www.tundras.com/threads/windshield-tint-and-heads-up-display.126717/page-2
This is a brand new 2025 truck I picked up in mid February.

    UPDATE: March 19, 2025
Just want to provide update on the ghosting issue on my 2025’s HUD. I know almost all of you believe that it was the window tint that caused the issue. I can confidently say now that it is not. I brought the truck to my window tint installer and he removed the tint. The same ghosting issue still exists even without the window tint. So it looks like this is a manufacturing defect. I have reached out to my local dealership and will attempt to get them to fix it. Not sure if this issue is caused by the windshield glass or the HUD unit.

It's probably the tint, I saw this often when I worked at a BMW dealer thru college. I believe some tints have internal reflection from their manufacturing process so it acts like two layers of glass with an offset.

The tint is causing this issue.

UPDATE: I put my phone on the dashboard and on top of the HUD to test and I can see ghosting too with my phone display. So for sure it is not the HUD. It has to be either the windshield or the tint.

Probably a dumb question but did your installer lay the film on the inside or outside? And manufacturer and product line?

My first thought was the windshield has been replaced with a non-HUD glass.

I know. Mine on other vehicle also had one and no ghosting issue. Which led me to believe maybe the tint make and type is causing the issue.

Did the ghosting occur prior to the tint you had installed?

    Update:
The tint installer was able to get a hold of another 2025 Tundra. The interesting part is even the one without tint has some ghosting. Is this normal for Toyota HUD?

I can see faint ghosting on yours too. Just like on my post #16. But not as bad as the original post #1.

March 6 UPDATE: I added seven more pictures that the installer sent. He installed different tints on the 2025 Platinum loaner to show that ghosting still exists (even though it is much more less). He said he never seen this on any other vehicles in the last 30 years in the business. ‍♂️ so far from what I gathered based on the pictures that he sent is that very minimal ghosting exists on 2025 platinum loaner that he has whether window tint is installed or not. I really don’t know what to say at this point other than I have to come in and see it in person versus looking at the pictures that he sent. We can see that he actually took his time to get the loaner from a dealership and performed the tests. He is located about 1.5 hours away from me so that’s why I haven’t gone back to see him. What are the chances that there is defect on my Tundra and his loaner coincidentally?

I had a Platinum loaner for a week last year while they repaired my cam tower leak.
I think the HU display did have a bit of ghosting or blurriness.
I remember thinking it was cool at first, but the blurriness messed with my vertigo, so I turned it off.

Is it possible something is on the 'lens' and it's distorting the projection?

    March 13 update
To: 2025 Platinum owners only. Can you please check your HUD and confirm if you see any ghosting/double image? My local Toyota checked a different unit and he said the issue also exist on the unit. He will be checking on another unit. I wonder if this is a windshield manufacturing defect on this particular trim.

I suspect you are correct. Just for information purposes Google AI gave this description of a HUD windshield.

Yes, vehicles with Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) typically require a special windshield because they need a specific type of windshield with a wedge-shaped PVB layer to ensure a clear and sharp image projection, preventing ghosting or double images.
    Here's a more detailed explanation:
    • Wedge-Shaped PVB Layer:
The windshield for a HUD features a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) layer with a wedge shape, which is different from the standard parallel PVB layer in regular windshields.
    • Preventing Ghosting:
The wedge shape helps to refract the image in a way that prevents the driver from seeing a double or "ghosted" image of the HUD display.
    • Sharp and Clear Image:
The special windshield design ensures a sharp and clear projection of the HUD information onto the windshield, making it easy for the driver to read.
    • Special Coatings:
Some HUD windshields may also have special coatings to further enhance the image quality and visibility.
    • Cost:
Replacing a HUD windshield is more expensive than a standard windshield replacement.

    April 5 update

Update regarding my HUD ghosting issue on 2025 Platinum.

My Toyota dealership has agreed to replace the windshield for free. Toyota Canada will supply the OEM windshield. But I learned that they sub contract the work to a third party to do the work.

Should I have 100% confidence that they will do a great job and will have no issues with wind noise and water leak and etc. ? What is the chance of this happening?
I am happy that they will replace the glass but at the same time I am worried that something will get f*** up. They also said that they cannot test the new windshield to ensure no ghosting.

don’t worry about that dealers usually always sub that out, it’s actually better as they experienced glass guys do it rather than the Toyota techs

so relax and let them work

I was relax and guess what majority of them went fine except that they cracked my screen protector and it will cost me $50 to replace. This is why I am always nervous taking a vehicle that I baby to any shop. The glass technician has been in the business for 35 years. The dealership told me that he will give me discount when I go back for service. I just smiled and in my mind no I will not because I will be changing my own oil.

UPDATE: for those of you who followed my posts regarding my issue with ghosting/double image on HUD, Toyota agreed to replace my windshield. It was never the tint that caused the issue.
Today, the windshield was replaced and I am happy to say the issue is fixed. The dealership told me that Toyota installed the incorrect windshield. No more ghosting. The second picture during the night to show the issue prior the fix.
