My truck has this strange grinding noise that’s been going on with it for years, including with the prior owner. It sounds like it’s coming from the passenger front-end side of the vehicle.

Can anyone help out with what this could be?

I have included a video below that shows the sound being recorded while driving.

Hard to tell, but almost sounds like a loose exhaust heat shield. Go underneath when the exhaust is cold and smack em to see if they rattle.

I can't tell from the video.

But the heat shield theory is a good one as if it was a wheel bearing, or CV joint, it would have gotten worse and exploded by now if its been going on for years.

I cant tell from the video as well. Is it only under acceleration?

The only noises I've had in the past were a loose exhaust clamp and an internal baffle to the muffler but those were exhaust leaks.

I still remember the PHM saying that the time to change the bearings is "when they sound like cats making love in a dumpster"

Well I did figure it out with the help y’all as well as someone leaning out the window while driving. It was the heat shield, or at least what I believe is a heat shield(honestly never heard of one before). It appears like where the shield was welded on has started to break lose, which caused it to rattle or grind while I drive. I took and just bent it back a tiny little bit so it wasn’t touching the exhaust pipe. That did the trick!

Might have to learn how to weld just to put it back on though. ;)

There’s a pic on the post as well:

Always nice when there is a happy ending.

I can tell you've never had an old subaru. The heatshields on those usually are so bad they sound like you have three broken rods. Welding them never seems to last me more than a few months. I've started just cutting them off one by one when they get loose.
