Sounds wierd I know, why would you do that? I have a gen 3 tundra limited trim. My scenario is that we have an in-bed camper, and when camping out in the boonies I often have to use leveling blocks under the wheels, usually backing up onto them. In order to do see the rear tire and where it is in relation to the blocks I have to open the door and try to go slowly backwards to get up on the block in the right position. First time I tried this however with this new truck I got a rude beeping from the dash somewhere and the truck went into park. I fully admit I'm not familiar with modern vehicle safety features, we have a fully manual 96 tacoma. Anyone know of a way to turn off all the safety crap that prevents me from doing this?

I think you gotta open the door, put it in park, and then back into drive.

    Following.
I have had a few occasions where I was inching the truck fore or aft, and was rudely interrupted by the parking brake coming on. Being old(er), it's frustrating that the machine I am operating refuses to obey my commands.

Not weird at all. If you use your truck other than just an A to B, it's good for many things. One example, I was pulling a ton of shrubs for several houses around me, being able to leave the door open was fantastic.

I cut a buckle off a wreck and use it in the seatbelt latch for when I'm maneuvering and loading/unloading.
Saves having to put seat belt on and off to drive short distance on the farm. I've done what suggested above,
been able to drive with door open but door is open before I pull out of park. But mine is a 2010.
When I was 5 we had a '63 Biscayne Wagon, I opened the rear door and out I went.
It was winter and I fell into a slushy ditch, no harm no foul. Perhaps I'm the reason these things come to market?

I launch a 23' boat solo all the time. As soon as boat starts coming off trailer on the launch ramp I need to set brake and get out quickly. Often have to get in, back a little more, and slap on brakes to nudge boat off the trailer. So much easier to back the foot or two with door open. Likewise when hooking up trailer hitch. The cameras are awesome, but the last few inches forward or backwards have to be done by taking a look at alignment of hitch and ball. The door open, brakes on is a total PIA.

Couldn't find any options on either the small dash features editing screen or the biga$$ infotainment screen vehicle settings to disable auto-park. Anyway I got it to work, albeit with a funky combo of steps. It didn't matter if I had the door open before or after the motor was running, but once door was open and motor running I started from park, put it in reverse (light clunk of brake coming off), put it back in park (light noise of brake engaging), then put it back in reverse (LOUD clunk of brake disengaging). Could indeed keep moving backwards in reverse at that point with the door open, but the dash still beeped at me annoyingly. The mechanical side of my brain is thinking that the very loud clunk on the 2nd move to reverse can't be good, plus it was physically harder to move the shift lever. Guess I can live with this, but I better park and get up on the blocks before I have any beers or I'll never remember the magic sequence.

Ha... Well that's a bit less than helpful, but I have actually been giving it some thought in light of the engine recall situation.

Haven't done it but if your will. If i remember correctly there is a option on the dash to not lock the doors when you put your truck in gear. if you were to set that then pull the jam switch on the driver door out and jump it then replace it the truck would think the door is closed even though you had it opened. I've had the door open and just pressed the door jam switch in and moved the truck. you can see it on your dash showing the door closing when you push the switch in.

What I do when moving with the door open is: Let park brake engage quick, then step on brake pedal and tap park brake switch to the release them and it will let you move with the door open. Only issue is warning beeper will beep after that but park brake will stay disengaged.

Previous generations back off with all the doors opened, seatbelt not buckled, parking brake applied and kids running behind the rear bumper. Just like trucks should do.

I understand buckling the drivers seat belt will prevent the park brake from engaging with the door open as well...

It’s not. There are people that struggle to adapt to new technology and change. Reminds me of my grandparents. Vehicles are safer now than they have ever been. “Back in my day we only needed lap belts, didn’t have crumple zones, pesky airbags and had “X” frames. Life was so much simpler.”

It's not a novel technology question, it's a convenience question. Convenience is why good technology stays, even when it becomes old, and weird ones are gone after a short number of years.

Convenience is also why new technology comes. Sure I can lock my door to my house with a key. But new tech allows me to do it via an app from anywhere I have cell service. I'm sure some will say it's not reliable and you don't know that it's not locked or someone could hack into it. They can also steal your key fob data and steal your vehicle.

Technology advances for safety will always be prevalent and grow/adapt. People with old mindsets that can adjust will not grow/adapt. That's life. Live under the rock or live with the rocks.

Even better! You live in an area where that's not a problem. Truly something we would all love to have but unfortunately, not as common.

Drug addict in need may happen anywhere. He better take what he needs for his doze without causing even more expensive wreckage. Broken window is $1k at least.

I grew up in a very bad neighborhood. Had a knife on me in school years, had to put it to work a couple of times. 11 y.o. knife fighting over there is why I raise my kids here.
