Anyone familiar with hail damage repair? My new Tundra (200 miles) got hit with hail last week. I hate filing insurance claims, since I've got 2 teenagers and insurance is already insane. My hood only has a few dings but the roof has a bunch. Would this be worth filing a claim or just paying out if pocket? What's the going rate for this?

Sorry to hear man. Probably varies a lot depending on location.

I would probably get a couple of body shop estimates and then (depending on how much your deductible is) make a decision.

I don’t know if some claims are better than others (act of God/weather vs accident ) but those pesky insurance claims so sure seem to count against us no matter what.

Get the estimates and then decide.

A claim for hail damage is not nearly as bad as an accident related claim.

Hail damage hits $5,000.00 pretty quickly especially when it’s the roof and they have to remove the headliner to repair it.

Had a car totaled by hail and it did not affect my rates.

If it were me I would probably try and find one of the paintless dent repair places near you and get a couple of estimates. Make your decision about how to proceed after that. I took mine to a place and it did not take long for the guy to tell me ballpark what it would cost. Mine was damaged on three sides. I called insurance after leaving the first place.

Ouch! I hate to hear that. We had some hail yesterday and I was concerned, but got lucky. No marks.

Thanks. That was my question, wasn't sure how it was priced. 50 to 70 a dent - I already filed a claim. Lol

So last September my 2013 got hit with hail. They were fairly small and my daughters car had NO damage.

The Tundras damage was limited to the roof only. Nothing in the hood or side panels.

I turned it into insurance and got an estimate from my choice of body shops. Total came to $4,500. They have to reskin the roof.

Also, I took mine to a PDR guy (the best around here) and he said bc the ridges in the top of the roof, and the amount and size of dents, he would recommend a body shop.

Hail damage claims are comprehension claims and are an act of god it should not effect premiums for your insurance coverage. I would file a claim but Hail season JUST started so depending on where you’re at sometimes it’s best to wait actually get the repairs done. Usually PDR paint less dent repair is the way to go depending on the amount of impacts or how big they are. Sucks you got hail damage already though.

We got hit with hail last week and I cringed the whole time. Luckily no damage but the season is super early. I’m actually looking at a truck cover to help. Sorry to hear you had damage but luckily your claim is an act of God.
I went to CarCovers.com and asked about their Platinum cover, it’s $215. Below is what they said last week.

I wonder how effective these shields or covers truly are. Usually pea size hail doesn’t damage the metal on vehicles even dimes and nickels at some point. It all depends on the force of the wind and impact as well. I inspected vehicles back in 2016 for a major hail storm. I recall a 2014 Evo had a cover. Really nice vehicle and it was demolished by the size of hail and wind factor. Car was totaled.

they also have what they we call impact resistant shingles for homes. Pricier shingles that some areas in Colorado require. They’re designed to withstand hail to a certain degree. I replace those roofs every two years.

At the end of the day the wind factor and size matters. Park in the garage if you are Expecting major storms if you can. Otherwise file a claim.

I believe it’s just an added barrier from the smaller hail. The big hail will win every time and insurance can take care of it at that point. I’m not putting a giant bubble wrap on my truck, I’ve seen those things. I just don’t want a few dings, I’d rather it take my truck out then taint it. If that makes sense.

Well I dropped the truck off with body shop to finally fix the roof.

just under three weeks without it. Got a Ram 1500 as a rental for right now.

I believe my insurance agent told me that "acts of God" did not affect my premium or count against me in any way. Maybe yours is the same?

I had my BRZ hit by hail. All told about 5k in repair estimate. I took the check and bought all Carbon fiber replacement parts. Granted, I need to cut the roof off to install the new Fiber roof, but it will look pretty sick when done. I don't think anyone is making carbon replacement parts for the Tundra however. But if you sent the guy the current parts, he will hand lay the fiber replacements.....It only took a year to get my part....

correct, mine was the same. Still sucks it happened and without my truck for 3 weeks.

yeah, I’d definitely do that with my 370z, but this was just with the roof of the Tundra.

For the BRZ, it was the roof, hood and trunk. I also bought the quarter windows, front lip and side skirts. She gonna be pretty. Slow, but pretty...

Finally got my truck back after 3 weeks at body shop. Reskinned the roof. Looks great.

got a few funny comments on the dashcam.

can’t figure out why they scrapped the inspection sticker off my window. They didn’t replace the window at all

They took the windshield out to replace the roof panel. Either they needed to scrape that area for some reason while sealing it, or they broke it while replacing it.

A comprehensive claim like hail, a deer hit, flood, etc. shouldn’t have any effect on your premium.

Maybe. I called and spoke to the manager and he’s not sure why. They painted and “baked” the roof off my tuck bc of how tall it is.

it’s the same windshield bc you can see the glue residue and my dashcam mount. Although they broke the dashcam mount trying to pull it off the window. I guess they didn’t realize how it slid into the mount and could be taken off.

On almost all roof replacements the glass needs to come out. I haven’t looked at the procedures for this truck yet, thankfully haven’t needed too, but maybe they could slide the headliner through the rear glass or they just left it dropped down.

On 98% of passenger vehicles/trucks a windshield is taken out for a roof replacement and the time is included with the roof replacement labor.

I’d ask them to replace your sticker.
