I have always just hand tightened my oil pan drain plug but was just curious how many members that change their own oil use a torque wrench instead of just hand tightening ?

Hand tighten and then a 1/4 turn has served me well for 25 years.

Fumoto valve so I just open the valve and then close.
    So much easier and cleaner.

I've never used a torque wrench in the past for drain plugs but now I have the Fumoto valve so life is good!

You guys hand tightening must be Col. Steve Austin. I always have to use a box wrench or a socket with a ratchet. :crapstorm:

Why not just remove the threads so you don't even need a wrench?

I tighten until it snaps, then back it off a quarter turn.

I agree and I also just use a wrench but just wonder why Toyota gave foot pounds for oil drain plug ?

so people can't blame them when they do it themselves and over tighten it or don't tighten it enough and there's a failure.
There's probably a torque spec for every fastener on the entire vehicle. Engineers don't guess.

1/4 turn of the Fumoto seems to work just fine for my application.

seriously though, I’ve never used a torque wrench for something silly like that…..come to think of it, I’ve never used a torque wrench at all, just common sense. I don’t know what the uproar about torque specs is about the past few years but it seems that some people obsess over it. Unless you’re building an engine or rearend there is no need for a torque wrench for normal maintenance stuff.

I'm the same. If you've been wrenching all your life, you get a pretty good feel for the basic stuff and don't need a torque wrench and a spec sheet for every nut/bolt.
I'm not aware of the lastest torque wrench craze, but then I haven't been on a truck forum in awhile. I have to assume it's just a lot more people owning trucks these days who haven't been wrenching all their life(?)
I might ask too if I hadn't changed oil a bazillion times on my vehicles.

I've always done 30 lb ft on the drain plug with a new washer. Never any leaks or stripped threads. Drain plug comes off easy every time.

My son has a friend with this same mentality. We've done more trailside repairs on his rig than everyone else in our group combined. He has stuff break or fall off his truck nearly every trip. Could be a coincidence, but probably not.
