Not a Harley but I’ve hauled a few others around. No issues with tailgate down. Bed extender might make you feel safer though.

I've put my name 1600cc, 700+# Meanstreak in the back. Ratchet straps are your friends. There's some concerns about the tailgate holding the weight, but I had no such problem.

Hauled a Road King in mine. Rear tire will sit on tailgate. There will be some weight on tailgate like that. If it makes you nervous, I did park mine up on a 2 x 12 cut to length to end of tailgate. Loaded up from a hill, so it was a straight shot in. The plank helped distribute the weight more reasonably off of most of the tailgate. I wouldnt want one of those cables to break while out on the road somewhere. I also looped a tie down through the rear wheel to keep it from sliding side to side off the plank. Worked great for me. Just consider that the Fat Boy will weigh in around 600 lbs or more

Thanks everyone! I thought about laying a sheet of 3/4" plywood down to distribute the weight a little. U-haul is charging $65 for an enclosed trailer. Too cold to ride it home. The bike is an hour and a half from my house.

Certainly possible, truck can handle it but there is some risk getting a bike up there and then back down. Ive rented motorcycle trailer from Uhaul before (they are really nice) and ended up adding a motorcycle wheel chock to my 5x8 utility trailer. It is so much easier and safer using the trailer. Guess I have seen too many videos where someone dumps the bike trying to get in the the bed.

I know it can be done safely but this looks sketchy

friend of mine just did the same thing.

Cheap and way less risky than getting the bike in and out of the bed of a pickup truck.
