Just picked up a 2015 Tundra and had a wiring issue that I had my local shop fix. While fixing it they got some grease fingerprints on my headliner and tried cleaning it with tuff stuff, which ate through the liner.. They offered to fix it and are either going to replace it with a OEM liner or have an upholstery shop reupholster it. I’d prefer the OEM liner to be replace but I can tell they are wanting to have it reupholstered to save cost. My question is should I push for an oem replacement or would a reupholstered liner hold up? The other option is they said they would settle with me if I’m willing to live with it. It’s a good shop and accidents happen, they owned up and offered to make it right immediately. What would you recommend?

Why would you settle for something less than OEM? I certainly would not. Yes, good shops screw up. And good shops accept the cost of fixing their screw ups as another cost of doing business.

That’s how I feel but really what am I going to do to hold them accountable? If they come back and say they are wanting to reupholster it to save themselves money do I seek a lawyer?

A lawyer? LOL That would cost more than the repair. Small claims court would be the route for a legal remedy.

The dealer I got my Tundra from got finger prints on there once. They had some kind of cleaner that cleaned it right up like nothing happened.

Obviously you're past that point but since it's a local shop and not a dealer, I think you'll have a hard time getting them to go OEM unless you start threatening bad reviews or something.

Maybe check with the upholstery shop they want to use and see what kind of work they can do and get an idea of what to expect. Could end up being very close to OEM....or worse.

I would get it reupholstered, sometimes craftsmanship is superior to rushed assembly lines. My OEM headliner has been hanging since 2013 and it's coming undone at the seems. From the front driver side and the rear passenger side. Just my .02 cents.

    Wow!

I was curious what the headliner for my '21 CM cost.

    $1400!

I hope you and your mechanic can come to an arrangement.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I'd ask them for cash for the cost of reupholstering it and live with it. Use it for something useful for your truck. It's half your fault for spraying some tough cleaner on it, so be glad they are taking care of you.

It sounds like the shop used the cleaner.

Being where it's at, I'd probably go the same route and ask for cash for the cost and live with it. It's not horrible for a 9 year old vehicle.

Ahh you're right, I misread. Good shop though. They tried to fix it. I've seen dealerships leave greasy smudges all over a new car interior and didn't say anything.

An good upholstery shop can do a professional job on removing and wrapping your headliner in any material and color of your choice.

I'd get it reupholstered. In black. Personally I don't like the gray much. And as others have mentioned, the end product should be much better than OEM.

If anyone is wonder a little brake clean sprayed on a clean rag and carefully wipe the smudge will usually remove it. The trick is to be conservative on the amount you use and brush once, then spray on a different part of the rag then wipe again so you don't transfer the smudge back on. Don't ask me how I know.
