So I had a weird clunky sound while going over bumps at slower speeds coming from the rear. Took it to Toyota and found out I have a broken rear passenger side leaf spring. The bottom plate of spring totally sheared in half. Toyota says they have to replace the whole thing! Meanwhile, I have a ‘17 trd pro crew. Only 40k miles!!! Tech said he hasn’t seen this before. They want almost 2k to replace. Can this be welded? Take to a different shop? And no, I do not tow or have heavy payloads. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I do not have any extended warranty. I feel like calling Toyota though and inquiring seeing as the tech said he had never seen that.

Not like they’d care or do anything. Just want to bitch at somebody.

Welded? No. Either buy a used set (eBay/junkyard) or buy brand new aftermarket. Either way it'll be less than $2k.

I highly doubt it can be welded. The spring flexes, welds are tight and solid.

its sucks that it broke, but on the bright side you can now buy a much nicer aftermarket spring and it will probably ride even better

Ok. Welding is out. Guess I was reaching a bit there. So if I get aftermarket leaf spring I assume I have to do both sides. Any recommendations? I have the stock pro suspension.

It'll all just depend on what you're doing. But if you don't know yet, then just buy a set of used leaf springs off of CL, FBMP, or even our marketplace to replace it momentarily.

See if you have a custom spring shop around you. I have a shop near me in MA that will break a spring pack and replace the broken spring then put the pack back together. I had a broken leaf and it cost me about 200 for them to replace.

Dude for $1200 you can get a custom set of Alcan leaf springs that would be MILES ahead of factory. Changing out leaf springs isn't a hard job either. You could get it done at a lot of places if you aren't able to do it yourself

As mentioned, I would check locally for a used set or have that leaf replaced for now. There are alot of options for leaf springs. It all depends on how you use the truck. I put a set of Alcans in mine...right around $1K shipped. The OEM springs are too soft for these trucks. Mine were shot at less than 14K miles on my 2020.

My experience is that Toyota's in general have too soft leaf springs. Even my Tacoma T/X Baja leafs were shot in short order.

Yeah it's crazy how soft they are for such a capable truck. I put Alcans in mine.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Helps me a lot. Honestly, i didn’t need a pro at all. Only reason I bought it was I got a smokin deal from a local seller pre Covid times. It was my personal truck but I have since turned it into my work truck. Used mostly for estimating. I will definitely look into all mentioned options. May just get the alcans if they are superior to oem. The times I’ve pulled a trailer she sagged like a motha.

I can’t find any local takeoffs. Are icon springs any good? At this point I’ll probably go with whoever can get them to me the quickest.

Call Lew at Alcan 970-241-2655. Only takes 4-5 days to build and have them ready to ship but that's if there's no wait time.

Icon is really good, but for me, I'd never purchase used suspension components. Deaver and Alcan would be the best tbh. Deaver has a lot of different types of leafs to choose from, Alcan will be all tailored with the options you input on the form.

Check the marketplace, there are some stock 2.5 gen leafs posted for sale today. Could be a great and less expensive fix for you to get your truck back on the road.

Most OEM leaf springs flatten within a couple of years. I wouldn’t buy used take offs unless they were brand new take offs.

@maziv52 where are you located? I have some some leafsprings in my garage that I would love to get rid of.

    Update:

Took the truck to a spring shop. They found that the driver side leaf spring was broke as well. BOTH bottom leafs broke in the exact same spot. Pretty wild. Gotta be defective metal or something. Can’t convince me otherwise. If I towed or had high payload maybe but I definitely do not. Pretty pissed I paid Toyota a $150 diagnostic fee and the dude didn’t even see the driver side leaf spring. Subpar performance to say the least. Anyway, spring shop repaired both for $350. Not too shabby. Thanks to everyone offering their used leaf springs but after this debacle I will be moving on from OEM.I contacted Lew and will likely be buying the Alcan leafs. 7-8 week build time currently. Thanks for everyone’s input, advice, and offerings. Still love Toyota even though leafs and dealerships suck.

My passenger side lead spring is broke on my 18. Thought it was the loose center cap on the rim but just saw the 2nd lead from the bottom hanging off to the side. From reading this thread guess I’ll go with Alcons. I don’t tow or do anything crazy with my truck. Has just over 60k. Crazy.

Alcans are the way to go. They tailored my leaf packs for what I do and I also opted for the Timbren springs.
