Help me make a purchase decision on 2015 TRD PRO?

    OK So this will be a bit of a detailed thread because I just got to look at and drive this truck in person today and its a bit to chew on.

    So I drove this truck today (photos below) it has a LOT of aftermarket gear that I realize is v expensive, Camburg UCAs, King Coilovers with reserves, etc.

    It also looks has some Deaver Leaf springs in the back which look like they're making the back sit a bit higher than the front (which is a little annoying to me) they also have the Falken Wildpeak M/T's on which I don't mind since I ran wildpeaks on my Tacoma.

    That said, truck has some miles on it (~150k) and obviously has lots of parts that would suggest it was offroaded quite a bit and potentially rode hard/put up wet kind of scenario.

    Things I did check

    1. CV Axles look good to the naked eye, no tear in boots, etc.
    2. No camshaft leak that was obvious to my (untrained) eye
    3. Tires seem like they probably have some spacers on because they stand out a little from the truck (maybe because of the camburgs?) I don't love that
    4. I could not fold the backs of the back seat down but I could fold the bottom up, looks like they put a subwoofer back there but wasn't sure why it would not come down.
    5. Bed of truck doesn't have a bedliner and is pretty scratched up
    6. Scratches on front right of bumper and front left fender (assuming this might be from some of the offraoding)

    I think the thing bothering me the most is that basically the entire suspension has been replace but im not sure when, or of the quality of the work at all.

    that coupled with the tires standing out from the truck a bit and the back seemingly being a bit higher than the front (presumably because of the Deaver Leaf springs) just leaves me wondering what else I don't know about this truck or if I'm going to end up with some bad surprises.

    Overall here's my perdicament, my 06 Tacoma was recently stolen, loved the truck, planned to drive it til the wheels fall off, however given the chance to upgrade I'm thinking about going tundra mostly for the extra size and some towing capacity.

    I don't really "need" or even necessarily want a lift, as the factory height of the TRD pro I think is pretty nice and spot on.

    That said the price I think is reasonable (mid 20's) and I like that its a pro, the color and the fac that the added parts are high end not super low end versions.

    I'm paying cash for the truck and certainly could afford more but also just don't really like paying too much for a truck that I don't drive every single day and I'm just looking for something i enjoy driving, can take out occasionally and have some fun with and makes a home depot run and some towing easy to do.

    Am I crazy for considering this? Are there other things I should look at to know what I'm in for? Anything I should worry about particularly with all these after market parts or the mileage being so high?

    One last thing, I looked up the service records and it has a lot of records with Toyota, was always a Socal truck, serviced at two separate dealers here but very regularly, was inspected in January for a pre-sale and looks like it got a clean bill of health, though it said inspecting for "frame damage" and I'm not sure why in particular that's what it was being inspected for or if that's common for Tundras

    Being that I'm coming from an 06 Tacoma I'm well aware of the frame problems those have seen so just trying to come in eyes wide open here and make an informed decision

    Nice looking rig. Couple things
    1) camburg upper control arm is the billet kinetik version. No need for the wheel spacer but depends on that wheel back spacing
    2) The rear seats only fold up
    3) The deavers maybe for towing a load so a bit stiffer. What’s the model on the sticker?
    4) fog lights look to be diode or Baja designs
    5) Cab mount chop looks to be done but not replated

    1. Is that a good thing? Sorry for the dumb question, I know Camburg from Tacos but not from Tundras

    Yea that control arm is awesome. Behind the front tire by the door they cut out the mount for clearance. This is common but you’ll want to have it finished cheap mod

    Outside the truck looks to be in great shape. And totally functional if you are gonna wheel it. 150k miles at 8 years is about 18.5k year. Heavy, but not insane. I’d look more at plugs, timing belt, diff fluid changes, transfer case stuff because all of that aftermarket stuff looks pretty Cherry to me.
    No accidents etc? Good price at mid 20s.

    Looks good. I really dig the inferno trucks. Seems to be a pretty good price.

    I absolutely trust a Tundra at that mileage. However, I'd pay a shop I trust for a pre-purchase inspection. Around here, those run $35-75, and they usually cover at least 50 different points.

    Look up a 2015 Tundra maintenance schedule on Toyota.com, and check the maintenance history of that truck to see how closely the shop(s) stuck to it.

    The rear seatbacks don't fold down on the 2014-2021 Tundras like they did on the 2007-2013 trucks.

    yeah that was one of the things I like it came in just about every 5k miles to a toyota dealership, even had rotors resurfaced at a discount tire (though I would have preferred new ones) about ~7k miles ago, so they seem to have kept up with it well at least

    OK that's helpful, just out of curiosity if each of those was needed what should I expect to pay for them?

    I know plugs usually aren't bad but I'm assuming timing belt could be a big job? any tell tale things to watch listen for with them?

    Do you see transfer case and differentials fluid replacement? Power steering fluid? Coolant? Brake fluid bled out and replaced?

    Not a dealbreaker that it hasn't been done since then. I would just go ahead and swap EVERY fluid in the truck to establish a baseline. I also have a raging distrust for dealership service centers, though. :notsure:

    also assuming it would be possible to remove the wheel spacers based on earlier answers if I just don't like the way they look?

    Same with Deavers, if I wanted to re-level it assuming I could change out the leaf springs to get it sitting more level?

    It can vary. I’m no mechanic. I’m just going off of recommended service interval stuff similar to what @Terndrerrr suggested. Maybe others can chime in.

    Regardless, if you do all of the fluids and some other maintenance items like have been suggested I think you’re sitting at $30k (or low 30s) all in which is a great deal for a no accident pro with 150k and those aftermarket goodies (in this market - subtract $5k if pandemic crap never happened). You’ll get another 150-250 easy if you maintain it.

    For comparison, I bought my 2016 with 65k miles in Jan 2021 for 36k, so sounds like a pretty good deal for a Pro. Had both diffs and trans (drain and fill) done around 70k miles. New shocks, CB shackels at 75k, needed a water pump and rear brakes/rotors at 78k. Mechanic said everything looks ready to go the distance ....just keep up with fluid changes. Do my oil every 5k miles.

    I doubt there are spacers on here. Just the offset/backspacing of the wheel makes them stick out further than stock since they are after market wheels. I'm guessing the back spacing of this is around 4.5"(1.25" from stock) coupled with over sized tires is the reason they stick out like they do. Hard to really tell with those angles though.

    Doesnt look like spacers to me, just big offset wheels.

    But if it was me and I wanted to take off all that stuff I would just find a stock Tundra. Why go through all that hassle if I don't know what the parts are or want them.

    I like the upgrade coilovers and UCAs for sure (I put similar ones on my old Taco), I just don't know if I love the Leaf Springs and wheels ... everything else is great, the UCAs and coilovers are an upgrade from anything I would have bought myself for sure

    Ask 2 questions, "When did you put larger tires on?" After that answer, ask "Did you get the speedometer recalibrated?"

    If they didn't recalibrate, the odometer is off as well, so the truck will have more miles than it says. If they did all this 6 months ago, not a huge deal, but if it's been that way for years, the truck could have significantly higher mileage and longer between maintenance than it appears.


    Also, for the leafs, if you are going to tow or haul, you'll be glad to have them. Stock ones are pretty weak.

    OK Agreed to purchase it today, having a pre-buy inspection done in the AM and then we'll go from there, I think the only thing I'm potentially interested in doing is considering dropping the lift just a bit and getting some wheels with slightly less offset, think the 35's would look better if not sitting out so far

    probably should have mentioned I also have a solid Foxwell ODBII (NT809TS) tool so I'll bring that and plug it in as well just to make sure no major red flags

    UPDATE: Leaf Springs are Deaver U748R

    so looks like a 2” lift on those as expected

    I have 748s on mine and it sat high. Deavers actually removed a leaf before installing them at the their shop. If this is an option for you, I would suggest sticking with the Deavers as the stock tend to flatten out quickly.
