Please help me understand tire balance and the placement of weights.

I had my tires rotated. I had no out of balance issues but asked them to check the balance anyway. They told me all tires were off at least 2 ounces so they removed all of the weights and balanced them.

Now I have a front end shake that I believe is due to an out of balance condition. Tires are newer with 6K miles.

The odd thing is they used a lot of smaller weights instead of heaver ones so they are spread out more. Looks like 1 ounce weights. The original weights were heavier and more confined to one area.

What really confuses me is they have a bunch of weights on the outside of the wheel and they have the same amount on the inside but close to 180° apart. I guess I don't understand tire balancing. It seems to me they are counteracting each other.

There's about 6 ounces of weights at the top and the same at the bottom.

Here is one of them and they are all about the same.

    Please educate me. Thanks.

Some of the more advanced machines (every one I’ve seen in the last 10 years) will actually call out where around the wheel the weight is needed, how much, and whether inner or outer edge of rim should be weighted. Not unusual to see it that way.

They removed the original weights. They were thicker and less of them.

Have them redone. Or rotate again and see if possibly a bad tire or tires ?? The machine tells them where and how much to install. .Or have another shop do them. Road Force balance preferred.

I went back and a different person balanced them. He said all were off by at least 4 ounces. I drove away and still vibration at 55.
I took it to Mr Tire who has a new machine. The manager said they were all off at least 2 ounces.
Took everything off and balanced them. Rides great now.
I called the original place and told the manager what happened. I said you must have an equipment issue. She said I'll just refund your money but wasn't apologetic. I guess my time is worthless.
BTW this is a very well known place.
