My TRD skid plate arrived from Ebay today and of course it didn't come with bolts. I know you reuse the 2 front and middle bolts that come on "piece of paper" Toyota calls the skid panel on non-TRD trucks but what size are the bolts for the remaining 2 rear bolts?

The Toyota parts number is "out of stock" everywhere.....so I was hoping to get something that is an aftermarket match

They call it ballistic nylon, not paper. It doesn't permanently dent like the TRD aluminum plates that take one hit before being useless. If you want more durability, get a steel plate.

Use McMasterCarr or local HD/Lowes for bolts.

Yeah I kidding with the "paper" comment....I am not going to be taking the truck hard core rock crawling so the aluminum TRD plate is fine. Are the bolts the same all the way around? So I can get like thread/thickness bolts at HD?

Anyone know if the skid plate helps protects the catalytic converter from easy access for thieves?

No. There's a dealer on the forums selling a steel plate that does though. Might ask CBI or C4Fabs if they're going to offer one.

You can get an M8 1.25pitch bolt & washer from anywhere and it will fit. Just make sure it's stainless steel to prevent rust. Also use anti-sieze.

Nice setup! Is there any way to access the oil filter or drain plug with the skid plate on?

Unfortunately there's no way to access the filter or drain plug. I will have to remove the skid plate every oil change. I was thinking about making a cut out for the filter and drain plug but I haven't had the time to put the truck on a lift and figure it out.

Thanks for letting me know. Looks like a great skid. I was the drain plug access might be solved with a Fumoto valve and hose that you tuck away if you can get to the level for the valve, but if you have to remove it to get access to the filter, might as well just leave the drain plug as is.

    No problem and thanks.
I read about the Fumoto valve but I don't feel comfortable having a valve as a drain plug that's why I thought about the cut out for the filter and plug. Hopefully I get some time to figure it out soon.

Does the drain nut face down or to the back/front/side? If it faces down, as simple hole the size of a socket should suffice. Probably a hole saw with some cutting oil should do the trick nicely with a few strokes of a file.

For the filter, you could just cut the hole to an appropriate size using a jig saw and then make a cover using some aluminum flat stock and some rivet nuts with stainless hardware. I'm thinking with a rectangular/square hole, 4 rivet nuts on each corner and a piece of flat aluminum screwed into the nuts with an overlap of ¼ all around should work nicely. Overlapping should help with any impacts in that location.

Another thought with this setup is that instead of the 4 bolts in rivet nuts, is that you only place 3 bolts: 2 rivet nuts with the appropriate stainless hardware and one through-bolted bolt. This through-bolt would act as a pivot point, so that when you unscrew the other two bolts, you can just swivel this out of the way, instead of taking it off completely. Less things to lose lol.

You could also do it flush to maintain the look but using the piece you cut out for the oil filter. Cut out a small rectangular piece of aluminum flat and solid rivet in the back of the plate so that it encroaches the oil filter opening by ¼ to 3/8' or whatever amount of material you need to place some rivet nuts. Again, 4 rivet nuts, one in each corner, and secure using pan head stainless bolts. Now the piece you cut out can rest flush with the rest of the skid for a more cleaner appearance.

Thanks for the input. That sounds like a good idea. I'll try that whenever I get the time to put my truck on a lift at work.

Just edited it with another way you could do the bolt set up:

Sure you even need the bolts? I ordered the TRD running boards and the hardware and when I went under the truck to install noticed the hardware was already present and just needed to be unscrewed.

This one is a little different, with the current skid plate, you can re-use the bolts but that's only 4, you still need an additional 2

I noticed the same thing when I installed my running boards...I was thinking that I could use 1 bolt from each side for installing the skid plate. Honestly I decided to just purchase M8 1.25 x 30mm stainless bolts from Lowe's instead. I may reconsider in the future to use the side "extra" bolts but for now Lowe's bolts were on the 2 middle bolt holes of the plate. OEM bolts on the outside locations.

If this is in regard to my earlier posts, the bolts I was referring to creating a cover on the existing skid plate so that you could access the oil filter easily. I think for attaching it to the vehicle you could just use the existing bolts from the ballistic nylon “shield”.

I also have extra skid plate bolts for whoever needs them. I'll send them free in the US. Just PM. (You'll need 2 beyond what's already installed on your truck.)

As for the running boards, yes the bolts are already installed and came with your Truck,.
