    Hi all,

I recently purchased my 2019 Tundra SR5 with the 5.7L. It has approximately 2000 miles on it.

In the last two days, when starting cold, the RPM goes to about 1200-1300 RPM and just stays there, while this is happening I hear a louder whining/whirring type of noise that doesn't exist when the truck is running warm. I'm more worried about the noise then the actual RPM.

When the engine heats up, the noises and RPM return to normal.

Do I have a problem with the truck or is this normal? Doesn't seem normal to me, since it just started doing this. Any ideas? Thank you!

Totally normal in my opinion. Truck is just getting itself warmed up. You have a variable timing engine which means it adjusts as temperature conditions adjust (warm engine/cold engine). It can be noisy but normal. I usually wait utill the rpms subside until I put her in gear the first time.

Ok, I wasn't sure. I'll keep an eye to see if it gets worse or remains the same. Thank you for the replies!

I just changed my tune on mine and it messed with the first 5 start ups.

Now it normalized. The computer needs to learn and adjust to temps/conditions.

Since you have a new truck check the oil make sure it was fully filled from the plant and consider a break in oil change

The warm up process has nothing to do with the variable valve timing.
Any modern engine will adjust the idle speed up until the engine gets to NOT.

If you've recently had a cold front blown in to your area, this process would be a tiny bit more magnified as it will take longer for the engine to get up to temp.

What are you talking about? I've always bought Nissan's and Ford's before, but I don't recall hearing the loud noises that this truck produces while "warming" up. It's my first Toyota.

I edited my op a bit based on your response as well.

I'm a little paranoid right now, just got out of a train wreck that was a 2013 Ford Edge Sport. Thing had 80k miles and was falling apart. So I'm still skiddish right now.

    Ahhhhhh I see.

Well now your with the best brand for reliability, trust me.

I've been beating on my truck since day one, i do mainly all city driving and i love my hot rod. These engines are solid and have been built for quite sometime now.

It was in the shop the last 6 months, every month... I was fed up and Ford didn't want to do anything. At least I got rid of it and cashed in the remaining warranty.

The issues started once we bought it, it was in the shop early as well, then it was ok'ish for awhile, then got worse over time. We bought it certified used.

Pretty much any part you can think going out, camera, computer, blower motor 4x, brake issues, leaks, heads, panoramic roof issues and on down the list. It just kept getting worse. I owned all Nissan's before that Ford, never had any major issues. The Ford only had a year of warranty left and I didn't trust it at all.

On top, the warranty is a $100 deductible for every repair. We often had 3+ repairs every month, then the additional expenses for the rentals every month.

I was convinced we were going to buy another Nissan. We drove a Nissan Titan after driving the Tundra and the quality just wasn't up to snuff like they used to be. So with the name Toyota had with reliability and better quality from the Tundra, decided to go with Toyota.

Wow, sorry to hear about your terrible experience.

To clear your mind the only time my 08 has been in the shop has been to mod it . Or just for general maintenance. Even my 08 does this same exact thing you talk of mainly when it's cold out side. I too like other wait until its warm to take off in it.
