I'm pretty sure I saw a post, but the search feature is difficult... what's up with the high RPM on start up? Gets up to around 1500-1800 for 15-20 seconds then levels back out to around 1000.

    Truck has 300 miles.

Maybe AC is on when you start up? Unless its electric ac, in that case nevermind.

That's usually normal for most vehicles to get fluids flowing.

My truck does the same, but she's olde girlie. My newer venza drops rpm much sooner, but she's also a v4, small engine probably doesn't need to idle as long in hi rpm

In the past, Toyota used that method to get the cats up to operating temperature quicker for emissions reasons.

Pretty normal for just about every car to rev higher to get up to operating temperature quicker

Yep. High idle and dumping fuel to warm up the catalytic converters as quickly as possible to meet EPA emission testing requirements. You'll notice this happens on nearly all new vehicles when cold starting.

I haven't noticed this so much with our late model GM fleet pickups and passenger cars though. Maybe they have a different methodology?
