brand new 2023 with camera in rear view mirror. no remote control for the garage door. I put the opener in learning mode, and supposedly I should hold the open button for 2 seconds, release, repeat, etc until it learns the opener code. unfortunately, the mirror shows me setup instructions each time I press the buttons and it wants me to hold the button on the remote (which I do not have) 2 inches from the mirror. there is no option to tell the remote to learn from the opener, and nothing I've done yet lets me program the mirror from the opener. I've reset all codes on the opener and also the mirror but with no luck. surely there's a secret method? homelink website is no help...

I tried the same way as you did initially, and after not getting it to work I decided to just buy a remote and try again that way.
    Worked just fine.

tried calling homelink and all they do is repeat the instructions over the phone.
my son has 1 remote that I might need to take back and program the remote for each garage door and then program both from the remote...

Do you have an outdoor keypad?
If so you might be able to use it as a remote.

outdoor keypad for one door, but not the other.
I ended up getting my son's remote. a newer door programmed easily.
on an older door, I first programmed it using the remote. then you press the button 3 times to see if the door responds. IF IT DOES NOT, then it will enter the cycle to program it from the opener unit with the program button.
it seems an error in their software logic. you cannot program the button on the mirror without first setting a code, any code, from a remote. then when prompted, just tell Homelink the programming didn't work. what you need is a way to enter the manual setup without having a remote.

    on toyota homelink

    1. have a remote to the garage and press that several times during the mirror learn part (this is for the mirror to learn the transmit code to send to the garage unit)
    2. then press the learn button on the motor unit for the garage door
    3. press the button you want to use to open the garage door in short bursts (usually takes 3-4 short bursts)
    4. garage should now open on homelink

and you have to do steps 2-4 in under 30 secs after pressing the motor unit learn button

this is how my garage works.

It took me probably 6 tries following the instructions until homelink took the programming. Zero clue what difference the 6th attempt made, but nonetheless it started working.
