In the process of painting the chrome grill surround and hood piece on my truck

So that chrome hood piece with the thin black honeycomb screen looks like it would let wind thru. However, the hood is solid behind it. It does not let wind in. Or water and dirt I suppose.

Wondering if anyone has drill a few small holes for additional cooling

Like three small holes. Maybe 1/2" holes??

If you were to take apart your hood bulge assembly, behind it would just be your hollow hood. It won't have any affect on additional cooling through the hood bulge... that's why its useless.

I’m talking about drilling holes into the metal between the bulge and motor

This may be easier to see. Or are these spots cutting into something important??

You won't gain anything at all by doing that.

Lol. There's alot of mods that can be done, but that wouldn't do anything at all. I have three 3.5 inch holes in mine that are for a light bar install and they don't do anything.

You're seeking a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
    If it ain't broke, don't fix it..

There is no reason to do that.
You may end up with a whistling noise, or worse...

Besides that, if you start running airflow thru the hood bulge, you're gonna end up with this...
Not my pics but I did have this problem.

    [IMG] [IMG]

My 2014 hood bulge kept popping out like that.
Come to find out the black plastic 'vent' was broken and forced air into the bulge.
The top would 'pop out' like in the pics.
It kept happening despite replacing the clips, even replacing the 'vent' that another forum member gave me.
The repeated 'popping out' finally broke the bolt/nut mount on one end in the bulge.
I tried glue, epoxy, you name it, it would never hold.

I ended up buying another hood bulge...

That almost looks like heat expansion and deformation.

The fake vent black plastic insert in the hood bulge.
It was cracked and broke inside and was allowing air into the bulge with nowhere to go.
So it was forcing the top of the bulge to pop out like in the pics.

The first time it happened I thought someone tried to steal it.
Although you have to remove 3 bolts on the underside of the bulge to get it off.

I would pop it back in and it would stay for a few days, then on the highway to go to work it would pop out again.
I replaced the black clips (and the broken fake vent thanks to another forum member) and it stayed for about 3 months, yet eventually started popping out again.
I pulled the bulge off again, and then I noticed on one end the speed nut mount for the mounting bolt was broken in the bulge.

You can try replacing the clips.
I think these are the correct ones..

Rocker Molding Clip - Toyota (75867-AA010)

Hood & Components for 2014 Toyota Tundra | Sparks Parts

    75867-AA010 - Rocker Molding Clip - 2002-2021 Toyota | Sparks Parts

You can find aftermarket on Amazon, but that is what I tried and they didn't stay in after a few months.
Amazon.com: XYZ Fasteners Rocker Panel & Scuff Plate Retainer Fasteners Clip, Compatible with Toyota 75867-AA010 (25) : Automotive

There are several different clips like this.
Make sure what you get looks like the black one with a single collar or whatever you call it.
The white and green (door panel/interior trim clips) have a double collar that makes the hood bulge stick out too far giving you a gap between the bulge and the hood.....

Thanks for the info, it is very useful. Do you remember how many of the following clips the bulge uses? Just want to make sure I order the correct amount.

There are 3 bolts and 3 clips on the bottom, and the rest is the 5 upper clips.

Ok, I see the 3 bolts on the underside, but how do I access the clips? Does removing the 3 bolts allow the bulge to pop out. Don’t mean to be dense but don’t want to try anything and potentially break something until I understand the procedure.

After you remove the bolts you gently pull it off...the clips will pop out.

    Too many, but not enough....
Hahaha if anything the flow into the hood crevices would create weird sounds or vibration or something like that.

I could swear that bulge has air route down to the top of your radiator no?

It does not. The screen is attached to a scoop which has no openings in it. It's basically a bowl that is screwd into the back of the bulge.
