So I have 1250 miles on my 24 Tundra Limited CM Off-Road. I'm not towing anything, drive alone in the vehicle and am not carrying anything extra in the bed or back seat. My MPG is 10.7.
I had better MPG in my 5.7 Tundra. What is going on?

I’m getting abut 14mpg on my 2024 Platinum. Currently has about 2800 miles. There’s an MPG thread on here where folks are saying it gets better after around 5K miles.

Damn. That's not normal. Is this hand calculated?

So what are your habits for driving? Do you arm the truck up in the morning for 5-10 minutes (see your in Montana)?

Winter grade fuel or it's getting ready to blowup is my guess. Mechanical friction in drivetrain is another guess.

I do warm up the truck for about five minutes now that we have snow on the ground.

Any idle time will tank the computer readings. Have you hand calculated the MPGs?

It’s a brand new truck so I doubt it’s getting ready to blow up at this point.

OP, what’s your build date? How is your oil pressure behaving? Have you reset your MPG counter after a full tank?

Oil pressure appears normal, I have not reset anything. I never reset my 4Runners or Tundras before and both got better MPG. The scary part for me was when my mileage was around 500 on odo I was getting 14-15 MPG and now it's gone down not up. Very wierd.

Idling it to warm it up will do that. It's not weird at all.

I live in the mountains with a big downhill commute heading out and a big uphill one coming home. Filled up down the mountain the other day and I’m having trouble cracking 14mpg. Before that I filled up, up the mountain and was getting over 16mpg towards the end of the tank. Both times I reset it.

Try resetting it after a full take to see if you get different results.

I got larger tires on my truck but my hybrid gets around 15 consistently. Mostly city driving but even on trips the best I can manage is 17. 10 is definitely low for completely stock with no extra weight

I'm not convinced idling for 5 minutes is going to cost the OP 5 mpg. It could reduce economy by 1-2 mpg sure, but 5 mpg no way Jose

Hills combined with stop and go can really drop MPG. Though, ~10 is what I get towing the boat in my '24 Limited TRD.

Around town where we have lots of traffic with short and steep hills I get 14-15 MPG. If I get some time on a freeway it jumps up into the 19-21 range. Every acceleration seems to drop my MPG by .1-.3. It is a heavy vehicle.

If you let it warm up in the driveway before you drive it it's using gas, so your mpg will go down. I have 6k miles on my (Hybrid) and it's gone up from 18 to 20 under the same conditions. Drive it very easily until it warms up - My mpg sucks for about 10 miles while the engine is settling in for warmth too. So far, though, I am not impressed with the fuel economy.

Depends on how far he's driving it. That combined with the sucky mpg when warming up could use a lot of fuel.

I don't blame you. Those darn Montana winters are brutal!!

I have noticed the same on my daughter's Corolla. It normally holds 34-35 mpg average but now it's around 28-29 due to warming up in the morning.

And add into that the loss from winter blend fuel.

So far I’m not either. I traded in a perfectly good 2018 Platinum for my ‘24. That 5.7 got high 13mpg. I figured I’d at least get better mileage with the v6. Instead, I average 14 and every day I’m tracking the oil pressure like a hawk for signs the motor’s gonna blow!o_O (slight sarcasm…slight)

My old 21 Tundra Pro with 5.7 and bigger tires also used winter blend gas in winter and also warmed up in the driveway for 5 minutes in the morning. It never got down to 10.7 unless I was towing or something. Am I missing something. This new truck is not close to window sticker mpg.

Final ask, are you hand calculating or going off the dash?

There is a basic formula that will tell you what mpg you're going to get according to how you drive. It's not scientifically correct, but it's a good approximation: Your speed times your mpg is constant. Also, the biggest factor in using gas (on a level road) is wind resistance. A lift, even just larger tires, is going to increase your wind resistance. Also, modern vehicles are tuned so the engine economy and the differential gearing are optimized as well. Larger tires will adversely affect that.

Another factor is the tire pressure. I run mine about 10 psi below the max rating on the sidewall of the tire. You have to be careful with slippery surfaces though, like ice and snow because it will decrease your traction, sometimes a lot. That, combined with improved ride comfort, is why people air down off road. Some people say that will wear out the inside tread faster, but that's not really true. It just wears out the outside less. I got over 100k miles on a set of Michelin XCH4 tires on my old 4Runner, with still some good tread left. I only bought new ones because winter was coming up.

I have manually calculated multiple times and I have never been more then .5 off my fuel economy. It’s usually only about .1 off what the dash says. At least for my truck it’s pretty spot on

Ok, that can be part of it. There are some known wonky traits in the fuel gauge for the dash that might be coming into play, and it's not horribly uncommon for the dash to just be wrong. Until you've hand calculated to see if your dash is even remotely accurate you shouldn't worry to much.

For example, I've checked my truck and I know the dash is a little optimistic as it is usually about 1 MPG higher than hand calculated. You'll need to do a few fill ups of hand calculations to see if yours is possibly being overly pessimistic. I've had vehicles in the past that were off by 2-2.5 MPG. Combine that possibility with winter gas and idle warm ups and you'll take a hit, especially if you have a short commute. Not getting up to temp makes everything run less efficiently.

Finally, you're still not fully broken in with that engine. MPGs should improve over the first several thousand miles.

If I'm idling for warm ups in the winter I see 9mpg (for my trip on the display screen when I turn off the engine) when I normally average 14/15.

A 5 minute warm up idle should NOT tank the mileage to 10 mpg.

This time of year, I do a morning scouting trip to look for deer almost every day. It includes numerous 10-15 minutes stops to glass, with the truck idling the whole time. I'm routinely getting 17-19 mpg. On longer continuously trips, with no stops, on roads with a max speed limit of 55, I get 21-23 mpg. That speed seems to be the sweet spot for mileage. Interstate trips averaging 70-75 mph speeds, I get around 17-18 mpg.

OP, there's something wrong your truck. Hopefully it's just an inaccurate dash calculation, like Godzilla said.

since you don't know long he drives this can be the ONLY issue he has. If you idle for 5 min then drive for 5 min => do the math. You see what I meant, right?

I have 18K on my truck. But the mileage has only improved slightly since the truck was brand new. It averaged 19 mpg on the 2 hour trip home from the dealership the day I bought it (combination city/highway).

I see what you mean, but still am highly skeptical that his 10 mpg (reported, but not confirmed by hand calculations), is fully explained by 5 min of idling to warm up. I doubt that's contributing to a nearly 50% reduction in what the expected mpg oughta be.

I religiously let my vehicles warm up for 2-3 minutes minimum (usually closer to 5 min or more), year around before I take off to drive anywhere.

I still get 12 mpg with my 5.7 with all stop and go traffic (zero highway driving at all) in a very mountainous city.
