Wife hit a fire hydrant. All the interior of the door looks okay but shell needs replaced. Has anyone done this before? I am an engineer and handy but haven’t done something of this magnitude. Thanks.

A tree hit my door. Was so much easier to replace the door from the junkyard.

Looking into that but likely will have to trade out the interior trim to color match unless I get super lucky.

As long as you get the same color you just move your interior over to the new door. The junkyard door I got had no interior.

Reskinning a door is not super simple, but doable. Involves disassembling the components in the door, grinding the seam around the outside off to separate the shell from the inner frame. Then putting the new skin on, taking care to line it all up, then resealing the seam by folding it over. Some doors have some spot welds that need to be drilled out to separate them also. Some will require seam sealer which acts as a water seal and sort of a glue.
All that being said, your seams on your door are all boogered up.

Won’t be just a new skin, gonna need some bodywork manipulation to get the seams straightened. A body shop would just replace the doors.

Realizing now that would be my approach: To get replacement doors and then swap in the correct color interior trim pieces off of my old doors. I am guessing the swapping and install of the doors wouldn’t be too bad. It is unlikely I’ll find the same color so I’ll take the whole thing to the body shop just for the paint.
