Okay that was a really bad title for this thread as I know there's a ton of different factors so I will try to explain.

I have decided I'm going to keep my Tundra indefinitely. As in, basically forever. The appeal of new vehicles for me has waned and I have my Truck exactly the way I want it. I'm big on preventative maintenance, brakes, fluids, etc. Heck I even changed out a perfectly good battery just based on the fact that it was 4 years old.

So the big unknown for me is the exhaust system. I have a TRD Dual exhaust since I bought it new. I'm here in the northeast where salt eats everything. But so far, other than a little surface oxidation it all seems solid.

In the past, on my old clunkers I would eventually end up with a rotted muffler and that was pretty much it. They would generally last me about 5 years or more.

On the Tundras, and in particular with TRD Dual exhaust, what should I expect? If it starts to rust, what do you think would need to be replaced? I know the TRD dual exhaust system was about $1,100 at the dealer (I recall it being 2 distinct part numbers) but that didn't account for the basic muffler and mid-pipe I don't think.

depends on where you live. If you live in beach or snow areas the salt will degrade everything on the truck over time. Even so, I would expect more than 5 years out of the stock exhaust.

Generally, toyota exhausts last a long time, much longer than other brands. My 2006 4runner still has stock exhaust and it is in fine shape. It came from up north and I live in VA so it has seen some salt and such and no rot, holes or issues with it.

I can’t speak for Tundras yet (just got my 2017 with dual TRD EXHAUST in April), but I have driven Toyota’s since 1982 and I think they have excellent exhaust systems. My 2007 4RUNNER (with 235k on it) still had the original exhaust when I traded it on my Tundra in April.

    just my two-cents..

Well, my stock exhaust lasted about 4000 miles...

Because I swapped it out for a Dirty Deeds system!

Looking at the stock exhaust when I removed it, it seems pretty robust and made of high quality materials, so it should last quite a while. The TRD setup is likely made just as well and with the same or better materials.
Since you see lots of salt where you live that may cut down the lifespan somewhat.
If you ever do end up needing to replace it due to rust I'd be looking at a Dirty Deeds stainless system. Great sound and much less than a new TRD setup, and the stainless will stand up to salt pretty well.

Should last a long time being that it’s stainless. Not that it’s impervious to rotting out but I wouldn’t worry about it for a long time. Just take care of the underside of your truck as often as possible. Get it coated with fluid film or something similar yearly.
