I’ve always felt that Automatic Transmissions are a bit of a crapshoot.

I’ve owned ones that were trouble prone (Particularly a 77 Chevy with the TH200) yet lasted almost 20 years without even a fluid change. I’ve owned one that was trouble prone (a 98 BMW 540i) that ran perfectly for me, fluid was changed twice, and then I sold it and it failed on the new owner in 1 week. I felt really bad about that one. I’ve owned many cars that didn’t have trouble prone automatic trannys and all was fine.

I do believe that of all the car makers out there, Toyota is your best bet. But even Toyota trannys fail. There are Tundras out there with very high miles on their original trans, and ones that have failed under 200k. In the end the best you can do is change the fluid, drive it carefully and pray to the transmission gods that you’re not one of the unlucky ones!

In my life experience, manuals are generally bulletproof if you don’t abuse them. But you’ll eventually need to spend $$$$ on a clutch replacement so there’s no free lunch on that either. When I was a teenager an old man once told me that cars are “black holes” with regards to money spent on them. I’ve owned 32 cars in my life and he wasn’t wrong.

A couple of tundras went 1 million miles. I believe all they had done was routine maintenance and were on all original parts.

My recollection is the first million mile tundra lost reverse around 700k and had the transmission replaced soon after.

Our Ford Escape didn't even make it to 70k kms before it needed a new transmission

700k miles will work for me on my Tundra. And if my reverse goes, I'll make sure I don't need to back out of anywhere

My friend's Escape lost their transmission at 30k miles, followed by the transmission ECU, followed by the Engine ECU shifting?? And immobilizing the car before 50k.... I laughed at him the entire time he was telling me this.. he just picked up a 1st gen Tundra and he's been very happy since..

We weren't too upset when it got totaled in an accident (everyone was safe) and we replaced it with a 2020 Rav 4 XLE.

This happened 2 months after we picked up our 2019 Tundra....again,

I was under the impression they were actually able to repair it, rather than replace it. But either way 700K miles is really impressive.

You’re probably correct it was a repair/rebuild and not an actual replacement. Beyond impressive either way.

I read that those really high mileage trucks were ‘pilot cars’, so they travelled fairly easily behind oversized tractor trailer loads, just pouring on the miles. But seriously, take care of them.
Personally my Tundra is the third car I’ve ever owned with an automatic. I’m scared shitless of them
since I only know replacement is really expensive. I’ve never, in a couple million miles had a standard transmission fail. Of any component in any truck, maintaining the Automatic Transmission is probably the most important thing you will do to the entire truck over its life. Mine will get full service next month so I can baseline it and know where I’m at.

The first one belonged to a hotshot driver that delivered to oil fields. He reported he towed with it often. Not exactly easy driving. The bed was thrashed.

ETA it was actually the second one I was thinking of.

Ah, that was what I’d been told. Seems I was not given very good info.
