How much does this trailer weigh and can I tow it?

I have a 2008 Crew 4x4 5.7 with tow haul, which I heard is capable of towing 10,200 lbs.

My church youth and some adult leaders are going on a camp trip in a month and we are needing to tow this trailer.

Out of us adults going, I have the most capable truck (I hope) to tow this 20ft trailer.

My question to you is helping me understand this image that I took from the trailer. How much does this trailer weigh dry, how much weight can it hold and I most likely will have another adult and 2 other youth in the truck with me with possible items in the bed.

Any help is appreciated so I’m confident and safe.

Easy, you'll feel it back there but you will be plenty safe and the truck won't struggle. Just put her in tow/haul and enjoy your camping trip.

Yes. Easily. Throw the gear from the bed in the trailer if you are concerned about payload, but two adults and two youth shouldn’t be a problem.

The sticker shows available cargo capacity of around 5100 lbs, and a gross axle weight of 7000 lbs. that means it weighs 1900 lbs empty. Load the gear with an even distribution, if anything maybe slightly biased to the front and you won’t have any problems. 5000lbs is a lot gear, BTW, so it would take a fair amount of heavy gear to get close to the 7000 lbs. So I’m saying you may not get close to the 7000lb cap.

What width and height is that trailer? Being an enclosed, air resistance takes more work to overcome than weight. I get better mileage pulling a car hauler with a anothe car on it than my empty enclosed trailer.

Where are you guys headed, if you don’t mind me asking?

    Looks like 1878lbs.

    Which can't be right.

If I’m reading the tag correctly, it’s a Look 7x14 box which is about 20’ overall.

Thank you for the replies; it looks like I’m pretty safe weight wise.

I don’t have a trailer brake controller. Is that needed or am I good without?

Appreciate the breakdown. I don’t think we’ll get close to that as well. 7 kayaks and gear like tents, chairs, Dutch oven, grill, people’s clothing, food, water, etc.

Heading to Saint George, UT. It’ll be around a 4 hour drive so not too crazy. I proud to have this Tundra to haul and have fun but just want to be safe and confident.

Looks to me like most any half way close to stock 1/2 ton can tow that trailer. Since you don't have an electric trailer brake controller, I wouldn't tow it unless the trailer had surge brakes. Let one of the other trucks pull it.

A properly loaded 7,000 pound trailer will carry 6,300 on the axle(s) and 700 on the ass end of your truck. That will just about take up half your payload.

The only other one with the truck can’t make it so it’s just my truck. I’ll have to check to see what brakes it has.

I tow my 16 foot 1966 camper yearly with an equalizer hitch and haven’t had any issues with not having the brake controller. I think it weights 1,200 empty.

I think Toyota recommends trailer brakes if your trailer weighs more than 2000 lbs, which that one will once it's got gear in it.

I'm still a bit surprised that a 2000 lb trailer has a 7000 lb GVWR.

No problem. St George and kayaks sound like a lot of fun. I was invited by my BiL several years ago to help his scouts and young mens float the Colorado down there on rafts and a few kayaks, then bike around the reservoirs like Jordanelle down Provo canyon a year or two later. It was a blast. The boys loved it too.

As @Retired...finally mentioned - you will want get a trailer brake controller installed in your truck if you don’t have one already. The tundra came with a factory pigtail in the glovebox if your truck came with the tow package, which makes it plug and play if you can solder or at least crimp four wires. If you don’t have it, they are easy to source from the dealer or aftermarket. I don’t recall if UT goes off of laden or unladen weight for requiring trailer brakes, but I’m certain that enclosed trailer comes equipped with them on at least one axle. And they make the towing experience much less white knuckle, so might as well use them.

I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 which is readily available online or at most trailer supply stores like State Trailer, Camping World, etc (I would think Big Bubbas, Wasatch Trailer, Sam T Evans, and the like would have them; I think Wallyworld might even). But honesty, a $40 unit would work well enough for a trip down I-15. Your truck will do 80+ with that trailer, but I usually stick with the Semi’s in the “slow lane”. Let’s me pass a few more gas stations…

I see a lot of trailers with similar capacity. Most are 7x16 or 7x14. Once you go to 8.5 wide you are usually well over 2k empty. My flatbed weighs 1700 lbs and has the same GVW. I was going to have them build a deckover for me with 5k axles for a GVW of 10k and a weight of 2400-2600 lbs, so cargo capacity over 7k, but my flatbed has been working well enough for me. And my buddies flatbed is set up just like that so I can always borrow one if I think mine will be over.

Also, I should note that my enclosed is Aluminium so it is very light. I actually have to load ballast weight in the nose otherwise carrying something in to it empty will lift the nose when I walk up the ramp.

The glove box or under the front left panel of the driver side?

Will you provide a link to the brake you’re talking about? The one I found and the video of installation is etrailer

Sorry - to be clear, the pigtail itself came supplied in the glovebox, but it plugs in as you described - to the harness under the driver side front left panel.

That eTrailer article is correct and shows the correct adapter if your truck didn’t come with factory pigtail.

I really should have one regardless with the Tundra model I have. Never know when I’ll need it.
