I need to pick up a pallet of sod. It’s about 2500 lbs. Do you guys think it will be ok in the bed?

It’s over double the payload capacity. Renting a trailer or paying delivery would be a much better idea.

The sod will be okay. Your leaf springs may never be the same.

What everyone else said....WAY Too much weight. Do it at your own risk. I just weighed my 2019 DC and it weighed 6100 LBs empty with just me and 1/2 tanks of gas. That leaves 1,000 LBs exactly of rated payload.

In what state do the scales pertain to anyone who isn't driving a commercial vehicle?

§2360. Excess vehicle weight in maine for example makes no allowances for being overweight for non-commercial vehicles. You may not be required to stop automatically, but a cop who thinks you are in violation can certainly pull you over and tell you to stop at the next station, or if they are an agency with portable scales, they could bring those out.

I would think that any officer who in their judgment might think someone is operating a vehicle unsafely (e.g. overloaded) could initiate an impromptu closer examination bringing in more specialized personnel (state troopers if it happens that the vehicle is traveling on a state highway).

Please just rent a trailer. I used to haul stoker coal for our furnace in a 99 Dodge 2500 CTD. A full hopper was about 2400 pounds and it was 5 miles from the mine to my house. It rode like shit.

I guess it's maybe a concern if you live in the northeast or west coast. For most of the country (especially the middle, where I'm most familiar) I've not found the police to be that anal.

But I agree, get a trailer. Your truck will thank you.

I would agree about just using a trailer for the weight and ease of access. This really brings me to mind about when I cut a full truck load of wet firewood. I can easily see loads around 2000lbs with that thing. Been doing it for years and hauling 25+ miles in and out of canyons

In a vehicle without a weight apportioned plate the total allowable weight will be based on the number of axels and for that a pickup truck could never even be close to overweight. The law isn't about your allowable payload rating given by a manufacturer. I suppose you could be stopped if the load appears unsafe though. That being said I am glad I don't live anywhere near one of the anal coasts.

I’d like to know what the failure point is with our trucks. Safety is one thing I’d really like to know how much weight will break you axle. Next time please load up until you break something... inquiring minds want to know!

There’s more to it than just axles and springs, your brakes were designed based on a max vehicle weight. Also, overload your bed and your front wheels lose traction and steering. Toyota specifies weight ratings for a lot of reasons. But like I said, please overload it until something breaks and let us know so we have a real data point!

Don't do it Bruce. Was in a similar situation as you, but needed 100 bags of mulch. Paid 80.00 for HD to deliver it. Never even had to load and unload the trailer. Just unloaded the 2 pallets they put on my driveway. That alone was worth 80 bucks to me. Last time I got SOD was from Lowes. Delivery was free.

Good luck and for all those saying do it, let them loan you their truck for that nonsense.
