How do I check to see if the engine timing is off? I had my head gasket, all timing parts replaced in my 2013 tundra 4.6L V8. After getting it back from mechanic check engine light has come on for p0430. They replaced the air/fuel ratio sensor, but I heard that the timing off can cause this. My truck has lost power. Especially the tourqe. At low rpms it struggles extremely bad, but once it hits 3,000rpm, it takes off. Does anyone have advice? I feel that this mechanic has ripped me off and also did the job wrong.

Your description of how the engine runs would be consistent with a cam timing issue. I would recommend having the truck towed to a better shop. Was this the dealership that did the work?

I recently changed two 4.7 timing belts. It would be very easy to get the timing off a tooth. In fact, on one I used a dayco belt and the marks that came on the belt were incorrect. If you have a timing issue, I think you would get a different code for timing being off.

I think you have a bad catalytic converter.

Edit: I got confused with 4.6/4.7. So you have timing chain. I think, based on my experience with 5.7 timing chain that it would be harder to get the timing wrong on 4.6 or 5.7 timing chain than my timing belt example.

I may be mistaken but if the engine isn’t running right it, could throw a Cat code

I’m sure it could, but I bet it would be accompanied by a timing and/or misfire code.

OP stated that he has a 4.6 which has a timing chain(s). I believe it would be much more involved to inspect.

Yep. Good call. I will delete previous post to not confuse people in future.
