2004 tundra 4.7 V8 (2UZ-FE) while changing timing belt the left cam (driver's side) got rotated a few teeth clockwise (obviously)There wasn't a belt on , and now I'm unsure how to correct this. My guess would be to continue turning that cam 2 full rotations stoping on correct tooth. I'm guessing one of 2 outcomes will happen, either this would fix it, or #2 make my situation way worse than it currently is,thank you for an answer people

Did it seem spring loaded when it rotated? Like it had some spring tension release in its current position?

Wrench on the bolt and rotate it back into position no need to go forward. Worked on many of these. Good luck.

That seems to be pretty common on these timing belt replacements and this happened to me when I did my timing belt as well. I would not rotate the cam further clockwise, or until any point where you feel pressure. Carefully bring the cam back counter clockwise and you should be fine.

No tension or jump, had it set at T not TDC, only a few teeth past T now. I wasn't aware you could move them backwards without damaging them, thanks everyone,I made it into a bigger deal then it was. Thanks for the quick response

It's not something I'm going to try but I'm curious what would happen if someone rotated the cams (without the belt on) while engaged in different gears then park. Pacifically rotating one of the cams counterclockwise (backwards) while in neutral instead of park

What does neutral and park have to do with it?

As far as the engine is concerned, Park and Neutral are same: the engine spins freely.

If you think this matters - please find help to oversee your work before proceeding! If you roll a cam without rolling the crank you’ll make valves hit the pistons potentially fucking things up really good. If you’re not confident how engines work - probably not the job for you.

So there's no difference between park and neutral, that's pretty ridiculous. Anyways what I was trying to ask and did a horrible job doing was I'm curious how the transmission links to the timing. Example would be doing timing belt if truck was in 3rd or reverse , ETC, instead of neutral/park. Would this have massive effect or no effect. Don't understand why I'm being insulted for trying to learn sh*t

See above. No one insulted you. Telling you the timing belt goes backwards in reverse would be insulting.

The transmission is not linked to the timing at all. Neutral by definition means the transmission is disengaged from the engine. Park is the transmission in neutral, plus the parking pawl engaged so the vehicle can't roll. Doing a timing belt with the transmission in gear would make no difference as long as you don't move the vehicle -- and with an automatic you actually could move the vehicle slowly and it probably still wouldn't make a difference.
