Hey guys getting ready to do the timing belt replacement on my 2000 tundra with a 4.7. Not sure if I have a hydraulic belt tensioner or not. How do I find out before I take the covers off?

    thanks in advance

.... and don't buy your parts on scAmazon or fleaBay. Lots of counterfeits.

I have the 04 tundra sr5 with the 4.7 v8, just wanna make sure, I need the tk021 kit, not the tk001 w/out hydraulic tensioner

also, how do shops feel about bringing in your own parts?

I believe the kit without the tensioner is for people who don’t want to replace it. Everything else is the same. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t.

Each shop is different. I quoted out a job years ago to a different shop than my regular now who would NOT accept parts you brought in. They would not call to give you options. They ordered whichever part was cheapest and sent it. They went out of business a few years later.

You'll have to call the shop you have in mind to ask. You have to talk to them anyways to schedule service.

Yes, its hydraulic and yes, you want to replace it. You really really do. Ask me how I know.

Years ago my wife's subaru blew its head gasket. She was living with her father at the time in another city. I drove over there and pulled the engine and took off the heads, and then had to go back home to work.

Her father did the rest of the job. But did not replace the tensioner on the timing belt.

Car slipped its brand new timing belt a week after getting the engine back in. Smashed all the valves on one side. Had to do the whole job again, plus buying a new head, all over a $30 part.

And even if this horror story wasn't the case - though we had a new member who had a similar story recently, but with a less-disastrous result of timing problems - this really is one of those things where you should have the attitude of "well hell, while I'm in there ..." because the reality is, everyone hopes they won't be in there again any time soon.
