I bought a commuter vehicle, how often should I service the Tundra?

    Hi all,

Last year I decided I would work lots of OT and pay off my 2020 Tundra so that I could get a better MPG, smaller vehicle to drive to work etc, as I plan to never buy another truck again, given the price increases etc. I reached my goal, so my truck is now actually really mine, and ended up buying a new 2022 Honda CRV, which so far I love, it's good on gas and MUCH easier to park!

Anywho, I want to keep the Tundra "healthy", I do drive it at least once a week every week, and it may be more often in winter depending on snow amounts. I was just curious as to how often I should take it in for oil etc? Is once a year ok? I live in the North East USA, so we get snow in winter, which means salt exposure. I do not tow with it, or abuse it, I very rarely even take it in dirt, she is basically a pavement princess. She is also garaged. She will probably get about 2-3K a year for milage. I did the 30K service in July of this year, which included oil. They also recommended cleaning some part for 115.00, I forgot what it was, but I declined. Anyone have recommendations as far as service interval, and/or anything else I should do since she won't be racking up the milage any longer?

    Thanks

Doesn't the manual say to change oil once a year? I believe the service interval is 6 months but every second "service" is just a tire rotation and inspection.

Buy a Battery Tender Jr for the battery for when it sits in the garage and change the oil once a year. If you have rodent issues like us then we leave the hoods open in our garaged vehicles which helps them from eating up any under the hood wiring. I assume when you do drive it gets fully warmed up and driven a fair distance to burn off any condensation in the engine.

I have pretty much the same scenario as you OP. The Tundra is my family/third vehicle.

I drive about 6k a year. The oil gets changed annually and typically I choose the highest quality oil from Mobil 1 or Pennzoil (for no other reason that it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling-ABSOLUTELY zero scientific evidence to back up if it’s any better).

In all honesty sometimes I don’t drive it for a week or two. But it always starts up with minimal noise. And typically when I do take it out, it’s for longer highway trips. My methods are FAR from perfect but the truck really doesn’t seem to mind after 3 years.

I try my best to keep it clean by washing salt and dirt ASAP. I honestly avoid snowstorms whenever I can, I just use my AWD RAV4. The Tundra comes out when the wife and kids come.
Toyota’s in general and road salt have never mixed well..

I work on the 6 months or 5000 miles oil change and tire rotation schedule whichever occurs first. For me in TX that's April and October when the weather is cooler. I am not a daily driver since I retired.
