Hello, new member. Creating thread due to fuel economy issue with my new iforce max 1794 edition.

Took it in to dealer because I’m maxing out at 14.5 mpg mixed, normal mode, my driving score on the app is excellent because I’m driving like an old man actively trying to get anything close to the 19-22 Toyota advertises.

dealer did a health check, their verdict is there are no issues and if no improvement after this tank (Shell gas) that they will have to have a Toyota tech come evaluate while I drive a rental.

if anyone else is having this issue, feel free to add. I could have gotten a 7.5 V8 F-250 for this fuel economy, so naturally I’m a bit irritated. We will see what comes in the following weeks.

    p.s. eco mode is worse.

    Original wheels and tires?
One poster here had a dragging brake pad/caliper. Fixed that and getting much better mileage is what he reported.

bone stock. I don’t know about the caliper. I’m not a service tech, and they did the evaluation. I’d think if I had a caliper dragging, I’d feel it pull to one side. Maybe not.

How are you calculating your MPG? The old fashioned way or using the trucks onboard system?

Truck’s computer. After this tank I’m going to fill up and do it the old fashioned way. But last tank I only got 440 miles. On a 32 gallon tank and 30 gallons of gas put in, that’s 14.66. And that was a mostly highway trip running 65 mph on cruise control.

I know I get 15.5 to 16.3 around town and that is easy driving and trying to coast as much as possible to allow the hybrid system to take over .
On the highway it is about the same depending on speed anything over 75 mph it goes down to 15 or less.
All I have found that helped was know that I have 7k miles it is some better . I use 87 octane.
I have not been pleased with my mileage from day one , the only positive from what understand is that it’s better than the gen 2 5.7 engine miles

So driving carefully and not even remotely enjoying the experience, you get 80% of the promised fuel economy.

if you bought a house with 10 foot ceilings and they turned out to be 8 foot, would that bother you? If they told me I would get 16mpg combined, I’d have bought an F-250 and at least I’d have the more capability for a similar fuel cost.

if Toyota says the truck is not defective, I’ll have to escalate the case.

I didn’t say I was happy about it . I came from a gmc denali 6.2 it actually got better mileage on highway driving 75-80 . Around was worse so I figure overall it’s about the same

That’s a bummer. Just to shoot you straight, it’s probably fairly normal and I doubt Toyota will be of much help. Good luck, however.

Sure you put 30 gallons in? Tundras have huge reserves and unless you ran an hour after 0 miles left, it’s pretty difficult to get 30 gallons in there.

How many miles does it have? Mpg will improve as you break in the engine. Was getting same mpg on first couple of tanks. Now averaging 19mpg mix highway/city with best of 22mpg after a 50mi drive going 70mph on hwy. truck has 2kmi

thank you. I did consider this. I’m going to run 2 more thanks through it and then evaluate. The transmission may need time to learn as well. I’ve also considered that the fuel gauge isn’t calibrated properly, so I’ll go off of the odometer and actually track the amount of fuel it takes.

hopefully it’s a number reporting error and not actual mileage. I’ve also considered that the distance covered in hybrid drive isn’t calculated into the MPG numbers.

if I’m anywhere close to the windows sticker numbers, I’ll be happy. The truck is really great. I’ve really loved having it, but I need to just change the screen away from fuel economy and just drive the darn thing and see how it shakes out.
Thank you to everyone for your replies. I’ll update in 2 tanks of gas.

Man, I have 35’s and a Hybrid with stop and go stupid Hawaii traffic and average 17.5mpg now that I’m at 6700 miles.

When I first got it I was getting around 19.5 and after around 3k miles it got better and hovered around 20-21mpg.

I didn’t get the hybrid for the gas mileage, I got it for the power.

Are you getting that based on the trucks computer or manual calc?

I have the same truck as you, and have no problem hitting the advertised milage.

Clear the dash cluster mileage in the upper left of the dash. Just click around in there and you will sort it out. I changed mine from overall to " per trip" which clears it every time you start the truck.
Go to your nav, click the car image, go to history and clear that data. Now you have dash cluster calculating per trip ( start up forward ), and Nav calculating over all. Once I did this every thing improved.

Secondly, mess with your hybrid as you drive. If it is flat or slightly downhill, just give it a little goose, watch the tach and when it drops to zero...slowly add power and do not let the battery gauge go over 50% .( tach at 0 and the battery gauge active ) Once you learn to manage this, you run alot on battery. I was doing 60 MPH , kicked it into battery and cruised along the flats for miles before the engine re-fired. I have got 29 MPG on a 3 hour drive with stops and gos, but mostly highway.

I am bone stock and keeping it that way.

If it's better, it's not that much better. I'm getting 15.6 on my fully loaded '15.

If you show up on a date based on a picture your friend shows you, you expect her to be within ~10% of what you were promised. I don’t want to hear “give her a try, she’s really reliable!”

Tell me the truck gets garbage fuel economy and is very reliable. Don’t tell me it gets 20mpg, and then be off by 25% in hopes that I’ll be happy that I married a 5 with a good work ethic.

Thank you. I’ll do that today.

I don’t want better than advertised. I just want to drive the thing normally and enjoy it and get 90% of what was advertised by Toyota and theoretically some governing body signed off on.

Mine gets atrocious gas mileage. But so did my gen 2.5 and the ram limited I had after that. I’d like better than 14.5 avg but it’s whatever.

My 21 gets better than advertised but my driving habits border hypermiling. My tire pressures are higher too.
When doing hand calculated MPG you'll never get a good idea on just a few tanks due to minor differences in when the pump shuts off. Watch for pumps that shut off at a set dollar amount. That will really make you scratch your head when you've been towing with a 11.4 MPG average and all of a sudden the last tank you get over 15.

But since when do people buy a truck for fuel economy??

again. If I wanted 14 mpg, I’d buy an F250. Buying a Carolla and getting Porsche gas mileage doesn’t make sense.

anyway, this has turned into a bunch of people being snarky over a legit question. I wasn’t expecting that. So I’ll bow out.
