IIHS crash tests

Having been a first responder, I’ve seen, and removed, bodies pinned behind the wheel and dash. Crash worthiness of a vehicle is a serious consideration, and I made a mistake when buying this Tundra TRD Pro; I didn’t check the IIHS website to check ratings on this truck. I just assumed it would be as good as the ‘12 F150 Super Crew that this truck was replacing.

    http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/toyota/tundra-crew-cab-pickup/2016

The small overlap head on test is marginal on the Tundra. That means you may not walk after a frontal collision. A full frontal, headlight to headlight, who knows, but so many frontal collisions are small overlap.

All that above to say this: I still peruse the F150 forum to see if maybe there will be a 7 liter V8 Raptor is in the pipeline. While on the site the other day, there’s a thread on a guy that was involved in a full frontal collision with his F150 vs Suburban, and the Suburban lost (driver killed). The F150 took the hit as designed, and the engine dropped beneath the drivers compartment and everything was pushed away from the driver. This rig performed like a Volvo I had at one time that went up against a BMW 740. Impressive Protection. After reading the thread and viewing all the pics, I decided to check out the Tundra at IIHS. Not impressed.

Like they say: beauty is only skin deep, and the looks of the PRO overtook my thoughts about the crash worthiness in the event of the worst.

Have any of you ever given thought to how safe your vehicle is? Lesson learned: don’t assume anything!

You seem to have a valid point. Will you be selling your Tundra and replacing it with a Ford?

All things considered...these trucks are safe. There is a safety standard for everything, and my confidence is high driving my truck. Virtually all accidents involve another vehicle I'd think, and have give (as in not a 10 foot thick concrete wall).

This doesn't nor wouldnt sway me in the least.

Well, maybe. If the Raptor gets the rumored 427 cu in engine, it will be tempting.

Too bad that they can’t factor in the risk to Ford owners of being hit while walking home on the road and freeways.

If you're considering a Raptor, then keep in mind it doesn't have the same crash ratings as the regular F150 because they remove the crash bars (and other stuff that is different). As far as I know the IIHS doesn't crash test the Raptor, but before you spend the money don't assume it's the same as the F150. This is discussed on some Raptor forums and was one reason I decided to go with the Tundra. Likely similar crash ratings, but way more reliable.

I'm surprised you didn't take the 30 seconds to look at the crash ratings before you bought a new vehicle.like, especially with your background. I did over a year of research before I decided between the Tundra and one other. Then I did another 6 months of research just between those two and decided on the Tundra in the end.

Lesson learned, do your research before beforehand.

I think what you want is a volvo.

Welp guess we all better sell our Tundras and buy a Ford before we crash and die.

    Thanks OP.

Thanks for the insights. My son and I were discussing the design of the Tundra and I showed him how flimsy the metal structure was around the grill. We all think trucks are bombproof, but the Tundra front end is nothing but a bunch of thin plastic and aluminum foil. The engine is the only solid piece that will be of any protection in a front-end crash.

So how do we combine the safety of the Ford with the longevity and reliability of the Tundra?

    So much this^^^

One could be in the safest vehicle in the world, but one of the most mechanically unreliable, and unlucky as some people are, get eaten up by a pack of wolves trying to walk out to get help. At this point, the difference between a 4 Star and 5 Star crash test rating matter?

My IS350 doesn’t have the best rating for front overlap. I knew and understood that before I purchased this car. I also understood this little sports saloon has huge, powerful brakes, awesome traction control, point and shoot steering, and just a blast to push hard. When this “beater with a heater” commuter car becomes unreliable to drive....I’m getting another Lexus. Most likely something along the lines of an RC350. I may see if there are any IS F sleepers around as well.

Toyota’s have me sold on safety and reliability.

Here is a 65 mph front collision.

For some reason, these mid-90’s Suburbans were not evaluated.

    2014 Tacoma

30 mph into embankment and rather large tree. The vehicle was sliding on ice, so I assume speed increased 5-10 mph. USAA acident investigator agreed.

Until they show me an offset crash between an F-150 and a Tundra, I'm not buying this safer idea.

Well, if you do buy a F-150 probably better to skip the Raptor.......don´t they have fiberglass front fenders instead of military grade aluminum? If so I wonder how that holds up.

    LOL!!!!

    Touche sir.

Yeah, it took a hard hit. The ass end of the truck came up quite a bit when I watched it happen. It was such a nice truck, and now it is more ugly than a handful of smashed assholes.

    Curious.
Do you think an aftermarket bumper would improve these results?

Don’t think so, and it may make things worse. The bumper may not crumple and absorb energy thus applying more force back onto the frame. The frame then collapses into the drivers compartment. Chain reaction of bad s*hit happening. The small offset crash test has only been around since maybe 2012 or 13, and though Toyota added knee air bags, the actual frame structure design was not changed. If we are ever hit, let’s hope for a small car, and that they dive under the truck. Maybe a lift would help? With all the distracted drivers out there, our probability has increased.
