Ok, got a super critical problem, can't find a replacement part.

    IMG_3724.jpg

Instrument panel dimmer knob for 2003 Tundra SR5 4x4 access cab. Apparently I snapped off one of the little plastic tabs on the back that keeps it on the rheostat stem.

I can't really seem to find the knob, by itself, anywhere. The closest I've found was buying the entire switch assembly, used, on Ebay, for $40+. And even if the answer is "maybe you have to buy the whole assembly", if I'm buying it used then it's likely that the plastic on that one is as old and brittle as mine.

I wasn't able to find it on a Toyota dealer site, nothing on Amazon, Rock Auto, etc. Best I was able to figure out is something like this for $141! (I know it isn't Roman's site - it's just whatever came up when I googled for the part.)

Before I declare the truck a total loss, figured I'd check with y'all. Any suggestions on where to buy this knob?

Elegant in its simplicity - actually talk to a human instead of Google. I'll give it a try! :)

Well, no. I think I wrote to him, but if so I didn't get a response, and ended up with a different solution in the mean time - and then forgot about this thread.

So here's what I did. Instead of spending $40+ on a whole new switch I spent $290 on a 3D printer and filament and spent hours learning and designing to print my own replacement knob.

    IMG_4106.jpg IMG_4107.jpgIMG_4137.jpg

It's not an exact replica, for several reasons, and I haven't gotten around to painting the icon, but it works and fits my funky DIYaesthetic.

I had one ordered but the supplier wrote back to change the price from $10 to some silly, sky-high price so I am looking again.

Would even consider buying one from a person with a 3-D printer if such a person was around (hint, hint @NomadicFrog lol)

I could be persuaded to print a knob for you, but for various reasons I doubt if I'd feel comfortable charging for a "product", at least not for the first guinea pig. While I have gotten better at printing since that one, I still haven't delved much into sanding, painting, etc. Caveat emptor.

So what would you like? As for design, I can obviously print another of what you see above. Or I could make some basic changes... try to make it more round, have a smooth top instead of the lightbulb icon.

At the moment I have filaments in black, green, red, white, some weird light beige "marble" my wife wanted for something, and a matte blue. I assume you'd want black, but if you think one of those other colors would be cool I can at least take a photo of some samples.

Lemme know what you think about the design and color, and I can get one out to you in exchange for feedback, how about that?

You are so kind to offer to mess with this: the one you made is fine.

OK, here are my stringent requirements:
-is not a bare metal post
    -when rotated, rheostat mechanism turns
-does not take unfair advantage of the manufacturer’s generous nature.

I'll get on it! But I also won't feel bad if you grab one of the real ones off eBay that the others just posted.

I think what I really want is that parts diagram printed and framed on my wall. That is some talented stuff right there.

You can also Mickey Mouse repair your knob.

Cut a piece of heat shrink, slide it over your remaining 3 tabs. Install knob and hit it with a heat gun really quickly to shrink your tube over the rheostat.

But $2.62 works :)... just add it to an order for other things so the shipping does not kill you.

Free pick up (5 miles away) or probs a couple $2-3 dollars delivered to the house. I choose the longest delivery date (2-3 weeks cheapest) and still get it in the 3 day high dolla shipping time frame.
