I got an estimate at a local Tucson gear shop. Nearly $3500 parts and labor. 5.29 Nitro Gears. No locker(s).

Is that just what to expect?

Yes - pulled the diffs and dropped them off and picked them up and put them back in.

I was planning on buying a new front clamshell assembly and rear 3rd member housing, having it all built out and swap em in myself…but uber low priority

Sounds about right. ~$1000 in labor per diff, plus cost of parts. And don't forget if you do want a locker or lsd later then you're paying that labor over again since they're taking the diff apart, and decent chance they have to set it up again.

You could get in on a group buy out here at premier west. There’s like a new one every other month it seems. Would save you a grand or so even with REM polish and will be in/out same day. But some things are too good to be true and not worth cutting corners..

I saved a ton in buying gears off someone who didn't install. My mechanic also did them "on the side" as in not officially through his shop.

That’s not a bad price at all with parts and labor. Did you go to Lloyd’s? I definitely think he was a little bit cheaper than going through Zuke but I did what I did

That's my logic, too. Maybe later this year I'll regear. I bought a transmission cooler to help keep the temps under control. Will be going to nearly 36" tires next week. I saw temps in the old truck getting near 250* with just 295/70/18 going up Mt. Lemmon. I'm guessing the bigger tires will be worse.

Were you in 4hi? Granted I’m lucky and have a trans cooler from the factory, but that seems really toasty for Mt Lemmon. I try and flip to 4lo if I’m doing any extended climbs that need 4wd so I don’t kill the trans too

This was 2wd up the front side. I think it got up to like 246* or something. I don't remember what time of the year. Going up the back side I also got similar results, but don't remember specifics.
I generally do 4low on anything that requires going slower. I really don't think Toyota should have eliminated the tranny cooler, that's for sure.

I haven't monitored anything in the new truck, yet. I'll probably start tomorrow.

That's mostly what I did. I bought a used front diff from LKQ and dropped it with Zuk for the locker install at his place in Prescott. Then pulled the 3rd before vacation and dropped it with him on the way out of town.

To replace front and rear with nitro 5.29s and ARB rear locker with pump and plumb and wiring also you need a switch panel to run it. Yeah it’s a little expensive. I think I paid about 6 total for mine with full install. But my setup was more of a full custom job with the wiring and the duel compressor setup that required a custom bracket over the fuse box.

to just do the gears it’s not that bad, but if your going to do gears no reason why you shouldn’t at least add a rear locker.

I think that if you’re already running big tires and lift it’s nice to have on board air anywhere you go.

I'll probably do an elocker, if I do anything. Heard of too many issues with the air lockers. Not the lockers themselves, but seals, hoses, etc.

I have a portable compressor. It allows me to take it in any vehicle.

If you're not spending a lot of time on rocks, I'd consider a Powertrax Grip Pro LSD also. Day to day and desert driving is awesome with it!

Yup stock gears...to this day still don't feel that I "need" it...though a true rear LSD sounds like a mighty fine addition.

I'm just gonna wait till a gear set grenades and deal with it all then....

the problem with e lockers is they don’t engage that fast, the air locker locks it almost instantly from what I’ve been told.
