I've been on the waiting list for the 22 Tundra Trd Pro for over a year and it's now in. Should I buy it or look for a Sr5 or Limited and modify it ? 20221028_161638.jpg

I’ll be watching this, as I’m wrestling with same decision. Except I actually have a loaded ‘22 SR5 that I’m happy with. Would hate to trade and regret.

My MGM Pro is scheduled to deliver in 2 weeks. Maybe I’ll trade the SR5 or might trade our 2015 LX570…struggling with this decision.

For the money a pro doesn't make sense to me. Raptor dominates it and an sr5 with 6k of suspension work would do circles around the pro. I have a raptor and soon to be sr5 with suspension work. Raptor will still beat it handily but the tundra is a cheaper dd.
It's cool because it's a pro but substantively offers very little for my use.

Get the pro. You’ve already waited this long and you’ll have buyers remorse by going with a lower trim.

I wouldn’t say “dominates it” on a desert path sure, pure high speed out in sands yes. Rock crawler isn’t much different and the raptor cost more. The pro is more like the tremor or rebel than raptor.
I personally have a limited trd on order and all the goodies to doll it up etc for less thAn a pro. (Thank you dealership career choice).

Fair points, but raptor can come stock with 37s. That firmly puts it in the category of dominating the rock crawling. And every other category.
The adms on the pro make it price more like a raptor but agree, tremor is a better comparison. I just couldn't justify 80k and it not be a raptor. And this is coming from somebody who doesn't even like ford.

Well little secret, I’m a service director of multiple ford dealerships and I agree with you lol. Yes 37” way way better call ford’s behalf and I am a little disappointed tundra come with 33”s. Especially with Toyotas long Baja history.

Get the Pro if you intend to keep it "stock" or slightly modded with a Westcott lift and bigger tires. If you plan to gut out the suspension, do bumpers, cab mount chop, overbuild it then get an SR5. If you specifically wanted the iForce-MAX and still mod then get the Limited. You could also get the Pro, keep it stock, drive it for a year and then sell it for the same if not more.

I would buy the PRO. It's a cool truck. Especially if you don't plan to change anything. If I had been willing to spend 70k on myself I would have gotten one. I no longer modify my trucks so thats why I bought the TRD Sport SR5.

I wanted the hybrid so I got the limited fully loaded. Debating the TRD lift kit or going icon or kings.

That being said, bad I been offered a pro instead I would have bought it. It takes about the same cost to get a limited to there, my limited came out at $66ish plus a $4k lift and you're there

Having any truck shouldn’t just revolve around whether you “wheel” or not. Some people want a good overlanding truck others just want a nice truck. Either reason doesn’t make them idiots.

It is correct that you can build a “poor man’s Pro” out of an SR5. but you still can’t beat having everything already installed from the factory with the fit/finish one would expect Plus a warranty.

I waited a year for a year and a month with money down at a dealer that never got me one. Another dealer I put my name down (not money) got me a 2023 Pro in 1 month. Took delivery yesterday. Granted it's my first truck coming from Sport Compacts and Midsize SUVs. But man, it is impressive. A few months back I was thinking of taking a Limited Hybrid if I could get a truck earlier. But after finally seeing one of my friends 2022 TRD Pro in Lunar Rock, I knew the design and culmination of its parts was far more special than the other trims. If I ended up buying a Limited Hybrid, I have no doubt, I would be spending another 10k to make it feel (and look) like the Pro.

    I say go for it!

I've actually gotten to use the Pro bullshit, like the suspension and off-road equipment a few times over the two months that I've had the truck. However, I doubt that I'll be bombing down logging trails very often!

Had the opportunity last week to buy a 22 Pro, was $73K but of course added $15K MA to that msrp and said nope, I own a 22 1794 April build date and couldn’t justify the extra 15 grand jus cause it’s a Pro,

Am I like the only one that jus can’t give in to MA’s?!
Here take my extra $$ jus cause And I’ll have buyers remorse in about 5 months after realizing my mistake.

Not because it’s a Pro btw which I’ll get eventually/maybe “ depending on the mods I’ll be doing to my 1794” but $15 grand additional? can do a shit ton o mods with that extra cash imo. Ranting done :transformer:

What will be the purpose of the truck? Do you need it to be more capable than the ‘22 Pro comes from the factory? I think if you’re doing much more than gravel roads, you’re going to want to upgrade the Pro. I just don’t see the Pro as a super capable off-roader from the factory, mostly due to clearance and approach/departure angles.

I just wouldn’t care to have the Pro-exclusive stuff if I were going to build it out to be more capable than a Pro anyway. YMMV.
People mod SR5s and Limiteds into far more capable machines than a factory Pro all the time. And lots of people buy the Pro and then upgrade everything possible on it anyway (tires, suspension, gearing, etc). At that point, you’re paying a lot for what is mostly an appearance package.
This is more my line of thinking. Not in terms of dealer-added market adjustments, but just the MSRP differential between trims. I’ll save the money up front and do what I want with the truck.

Yes, people mod their trucks by spending the same amount of money into bigger and badder parts. That clearly wasn’t my point. The actual point was that most people DON’T mod their trucks. At least not on the level of $15k+. It’s why Amazon makes a fortune on cheap truck parts. Most people will notice that there are more stock new Raptors out there than heavily modded ones. The ones you do see are usually 6-7 years old, the OG owner is long gone, and it looks like it’s been driven into the ground or has a salvage title.

The original comparison compares apples to oranges because a Pro is still going to more capable than an SR5 with more bells and whistles. Of that $15k you out into an SR5, don’t forget that half of that is going to labor. Plus the warranty will be voided. But let’s be honest, how many people actually consider window tint a “mod”.

In the Pro vs modded SR5 debate, the stock pro will hold most of its value whereas a highly modded SR5 will fetch less than bone stock SR5 with similar mileage and all that money spent on mods will fetch Pennie’s on the dollar.

It all depends on what the OP’s purpose is for his truck. Lots of people aren’t precious about resale or warranty and don’t spend any money on labor because they do it themselves. My point is, why buy a Pro if you’re going to swap out the Pro suspension for something more capable? Why buy a Pro if you’re going to swap out the Pro wheels for something with an offset that will work with your new aftermarket suspension and UCAs? Just makes more sense to me to save the extra MSRP plus whatever obnoxious market adjustment they put on the Pro and start with more of a blank slate. That is, IF you’re going to build a truck that is more capable than any factory Tundra (which is not difficult or expensive to do).

And I’m sorry, I’m not trying to ruffle feathers, but I completely disagree that a stock Pro is very much more capable at all than a stock SR5. You’ve got a 1” lift kit and some cameras. The locker can be had on an SR5, too. Look at all the ads from Toyota with the new Pro. It’s dirt roads. Maybe a 3” deep creek crossing. The 1” lift and little bit of extra suspension travel isn’t really isn’t doing much, but it looks good doing it.

I do agree that most people aren’t doing more than dirt or gravel roads anyway and probably don’t need a far more capable rig. It all depends on what the purpose for the truck is.
