I'm about to tick over to 180k miles and I have a 300+ mile road trip coming up, I have a 2000 tundra pre vvti (Non I-Force) is my engine an interference engine or not? My trip is on Aug 1st so I feel like if I need I have time to change the bent but I would prefer to after my trip so I don't feel pressured for time if I mess something up.

Man, it's not the end of the world if I tick over 180k before I change the belt. Is it?

5 years or every 90,000 miles what they tell you on the belt. ... If the belt breaks 99 percent of the time the heads will be trashed if not the pistons and sometimes bottom end as rods break. It's a roll of the dice.

End of the world? Nah. In reality, the worst that can happen is you need a new engine, the world will still be here for sure.

I'm gonna try and do it, I can't remember the last time the belt was changed. This Truck means to much to die. It has been in my family for 4 major accidents and 20 years of being a reliable truck.

Thank you. I have also decided that I am going to go to the shops I trust and get things priced out.

Should I replace the auto-tensioner too?

In my opinion, that is the most important part. I have lost engines to timing belts before...but never because the belt broke, it was always the tensioner that became week and allowed the belt to slip.

Buy the parts and take it to them. You'll save money and know they won't be able to cheap out on parts.

I hear what you're saying, but of the mechanics that I ever discussed this with they said they will not provide their 12 month warranty unless they supply the parts. So if you hand Joe mechanic all oem parts, he goofs something up and the belt snaps 100 miles later, Joe says "not my fault, I only warranty my parts". He'll be happy to do the job again for full price though. At least that's the response I've encountered.

Very true. Its easier to just request the parts you want and let them purchase and install.
