Is the Turning Radius an issue in parking garages?

Coming from a Tacoma, I’ve been thinking about the differences I can expect in a Tundra. Hope to be an owner in March. The part that makes me nervous is the turning radius.

Roundabouts, U-turns, parking garages, etc…how challenging is it compared to other full size pickups, like a Ford 150 or RAM 1500?

how bad is it? Is it this comedy of errors that I found on YT or is it really not that bad?

    edit:

I am looking at 6.5 ft bed w/ the Double Cab Model.

I have had my Tundra for 4 months still adjusting to the turning radius and lack of power steering boost in parking. 4th truck over 22 years as primary vehicle to include crew cab 2500. Hardest to park br far and much harder than my previous Ram 1500. I highly recommend the cameras. The steering feel is low when parking so they help a lot

This is the long version of the Tundra. I have the same land barge version. In the video, it looked more like the clearance to the low sprinkler lines was the main focus. With any thing, you need to get used to it and know when to start turning. I find that backing in works best rather than trying to turn nose first. I haven't spent much time in parking garages but I would just do the same thing and back in. I have the 360 cameras as well so I would use those to help center the truck in the spot.

Turning radius only got worst from last gen to current gen, and they were leading for largest turn radius by a mile last generation.

    And new generation got worst

I had a ram1500 before and could do uturns no problem, the tundra cannot maneuver as well as the ram

That version will be 1 foot shorter! With a shorter wheelbase, it should be marginally better than the Crewmax 6.5

I’m hoping having the 6.5ft bed w/ double cab and just getting used to how it drives will be enough. If I don’t feel comfortable with turning radius I may have to give up the truck not long after. Why Toyota Tundra then? Reliability (time will tell) and resale value.

Should be fine. My crew cab Cummins 8ft was nothing but 3 point parking everywhere. Great reason for me to stay out of town

If you were driving both trucks back to back then fine. You’ll adjust to your truck in all conditions not just turning radius. I don’t even remember how good or bad my old Tundra was. If your a decent driver you’ll adjust

Ha ha I own a f350 long box, and a 2022 1794 crew 5.5…. The tundra is no issue in parkades if you can actually drive which albeit is a stretch for some.

    2.5 Gen Tundra Crewmax - 22 ft
Dodge Ram Short Bed 5.7 23.1 ft
    Chev ZR2 Short Bed 5.7 - 23.1 ft
    Ford f150 Supercrew 5.5 23.9 ft
2022 Tundra Crewmax Short Bed 24.3 ft

Chev info came from an autoblog site

From the info the older Tundra is the tightest, Chev & Dodge is close, then Ford and then New Tundra last.

    fwiw
I have experience with the older Tundra, New F150, New Tundra, GMC. All shortbeds.
On my test drive I did a specific test as turning radius is important to me.
A 3 point turn was needed on a narrow road with the Ford and the New Tundra

My other company vehicle is a BMW i3 with a turning radius of 16'. I take this downtown daily and usually park in underground parkades. Having this takes the pressure of the Tundra, in my case, to perform in these tight spots.

Doesn't seem bad to me. Any difference from this and my previous trucks is negligible.

Just parked at the airport. Nothing but the rear view camera on mine. Hardest part is knowing where the front end stops due to the tall hood. (3” lift doesn’t help either) :)

I've stated it elsewhere - the 6.5' bed crewmax has a tighter turning circle than the 6.5' bed screw f150. My point being, it could be worse.

So surely Toyota knows that turning radius is a concern for pickup drivers. Why then did they take last place with highest radius? I always thought that foreign vehicles had tighter turn radius over the US big 3. Not in this case. Wondering why?

My 2014 f150 is a supercrew 6.5’ bed and had a turning circle of 50.4’. The tundra you are looking at is 48.6’. While my truck is large and can be a pain at times, its usually not impossible. Backing in is the easiest

I have a TRD Pro and have owned it for 4 months. Came from a 2019 Tacoma. You will notice the difference in size almost immediately lol. I'm still getting use to the turning radius after 4 months. I rely on the bird's eye view camera and sensors a lot. I actually manually click on the camera button sometimes just to make sure I'm not about to hit a curb, etc.

I drive my Tundra 22 crew cab short bed in San Francisco downtown and park in downtown garage next to my office.

Soo... What can I say. When I leave the garage, and need to make a tight turn at the turnaround, I get stuck most of the times like an idiot for the first month. Now I can make that tight-ish turn about 70% of the time, other times my back wheel hops onto the curb a bit. It feels like I'm driving a 3/4 ton truck in terms of maneuverability

I think it's a combination of me still getting used to the truck after 4 months, and it's also very hard to see how far the hood corner is (you can't really see it, have to feel it and get used to it).

I had a ram 1500 truck for the past ten years and was always zooming through this turn without any issues as ram turned much tighter.

Parking wise... Yes you will have to back into the spots but it's not a big deal. Make sure you get full surround cameras as it's extremely helpful when squeezing into tight spots and to make most of the available space.

Now, turning radius isn't terrible, you'll get used to it. Just make sure you read through all of the gripes that Tundra owners have on this forum, then test it out for yourself during the test drives... Turning radius is the least of new Tundra negatives I'd say

Not all. There are some old ones out there. The oldest one at Piedmont Hospital in ATL comes to mind. Tight in my wife's mid size CUV.

I drove a 2014 Tacoma access cab, 6' bed, then a Mini Cooper S 2-door, now the 2023 Tundra Crewmax 6.5' bed. I've only had it a month or so and the parking is getting better. I definitely can't squeeze it into every spot I probably could yet but it's getting massively better. I also live in a small to medium size city (70k pop not including the surrounding areas) so I don't have to worry about tiny parking garages. I find with PVM parallel parking it is easier then the wife's Subaru Crosstrek for some reason.

What’s strange is that I had a 22 gmc short bed crew max and my tundra turns way better than that did .

I think the garage in the video is in Washington, DC. :) We have some old ones like that but most are being rebuilt with towers on them.

The driver in the video didn't get stopped by the clearance sign at the entrance to the garage!

Enjoy the truck and forget the numbers.
To get to my cabin I go through a single lane logging road that was carved out of rock faced hills.
It winds 90 degree at some spots. Used to be easy with the Jeeps and later 4Runners that I owned. Need to be careful with my 18 Tundra due to its size, unless I want pin striping, but it actually tracks better (less wheel hop) than the 4Runner did. I think because of its triple tech frame.
Anyway, so turning radius is important to me. Sometimes I am pulling trailers through there.

Previous gen tundra had an insane turning radius. Hard to compete with that.

My 23 crewmax has the turning radius i would expect a full size truck to have. I would not call it great but its not bad.

Driving through an in and out parking lot earlier. Had to back up twice in the turning late to properly adjust to the turning angle.

Definitely worse than the 21 Silverado and my challenger

I just looked, the 2020 Tundra turning radius tops out at the same place the 2023 Tundra begins. Over 24’.

When you say insane, do you mean insanely bad or insanely good?

Hyatt Regency deck in Miami was crazy small. I had to stop and back-up multiple times to get out of the deck (in the main thoroughfares) with my Tacoma of all things. Any older deck in a large city will probably be a problem because when those were built, vehicles were much smaller.

Do they have after market camera that would be the equivalent? My SR5 will not have the PVM and other cameras mentioned in other packages.

Not really... Nothing that won't look terrible... Someone here wanted to use a set that was meant to be used for rv and a separate monitor...
