Issue Filling Up My Gas Tank

Hey guys. I have a 2017 Tundra and I am having an ANNOYING issue with my gas tank. When filling up my gas tank the gas keeps coming back up and shuts off the gas. Takes me like 30+ minutes to fill up my tank. I replaced the vents and the hose but its still having this issue. Some one said I have to replace my tank. Seeing if any of you can help y diagnose and fix this before going this route.! Thank you

 

Sometime it could be a shitty pump at the gas station. I have noticed this when filling up rental cars. Does it happen at other gas stations too?

 

Does it fuel properly with hoses to canister disconnected?

You mentioned replacing hoses and such...if the canister is saturated, new hoses etc wont help. If it fuels fine with vent tubes to the canister disconnected then the canister is more than likely the culprit.

My fried replaced it at his shop in long beach. If you can tell me how to disconnect it ill try it

 

Unfortunately I'm not near my truck. But the evap canister I think is right above the axle on the driver side. Just disconnect the vent lines going to it.

Couple of questions. 1) Do you off road your truck? 2) Do you top off your tank?
Topping off your tank can cause problems with the charcoal canister in your evap system....... Expensive to repair
If you wheel you may have a stuck roll over valve. Sometimes this problem resolves itself.... I know of 1 such case.
The proper fix is (you were informed correctly) is to replace the tank. What I did was drop the tank, remove the filler hose at the tank and pop the valve open. The valve is located about 7" down and there's an anti-siphon ring to get past. You can see the valve/gate, it's shiny silver.

I think topping off is considered overfilling, not filling. If it clicks once it’s full, it you pull the trigger again it’s topping off. At least that’s how it usually works.

 

I found a charcoal canister on ebay for $200. Its still sitting in my garage waiting for me to install it haha

 

@Tundyfundy is correct. Full tank is fine but trying to force another half gallon in after that first click of the pump will foul the charcoal canister.

 

I used to fit 3.5 ga in after the first click haha

 

I was probably using my charcoal canister as an aux fuel cell

 

Yeah, you're never one to push the limits,,,,,. I can't can't believe it dried out and is working again, that's really cool. You could probably sell your spare for $250.

 

Oh no its still messed up. I have to keep the nozzle just under one click. But Im able to fill it up thats why I havent been motivated to swap it

Yes I do offroad quite a bit. Ill try and drop it. When you say pop the valve, should that fix the issue. In theory

 

Yes, sort of. You can "pop" it back open with something long and thin. Mine snapped open really easily. My fear was that it'd just happen again so I bent the gate and disabled the valve completely. I, of course, can't recommend this for anyone else.

 

I dropped the tank this morning and that rollover valve was the issue. Thank you so much!

 

TSP on this issue for 2017s. The fix is a new filler neck. It was happening to my 2016 and they just replaced the filler neck a week ago. I haven’t tried to put any gas in yet since I’m not really going anywhere.

It has been happening to me on and off over the last several months.

 

I replaced my filler neck because i thought it was the issue, but it still happened. After I dropped the dank and looked down filler neck hole i saw the silver Roll Over Valve, used a piece of bailing wire to push it, super easy, and put it back together and it works. Took me and my brother like 40 minutes total

 

I may have to connect with you in the future if it happens to me again. SO frustrating!!!

 

Once I hear the click I wait 30 sec then fill one more time. This bad? Learned the trick from TFL on YouTube.

After replacing the filler neck, still can’t put gas in.

 

Sounds like you need to run the tank low, drop it and pop the roll over valve open.

 

Well, It worked for filling up my tank once. IDK what happened but I can tfill up the tank again without the gas shutting off 10 cents at a time.
