Does anyone know how to deactivate keyless entry?

With the car having a push button start, if you deactivate keyless entry, how do you start the car?

I used to have a regular key to open and start the car, so apologize for the 20th century questions :anonymous:

Not sure why you would want to do this… you can deactivate it by Techstream. There’s a really complicated manual procedure too…

Once smart key functionality is disabled engine can be started by holding the key up to the push start button. Also the key fob buttons will still work to lock/unlock.

I don't have an answer, but I find the feature so convenient I'm wondering why you would want to? That's actually a real question, I'm curious.

We are having a string of cars being stolen due to keyless entry. I am good with clicking a button to open a car and turning a key. I could care less about walking up to a car and having it open.

How is the theft working...any idea? I don't think I can unlock my truck without touching the handle with the key fob on my person or pushing the button. I've had a vehicle in the past that unlocked when it sensed the key fob approach, is that a feature of the 22? I'm learning new stuff everyday about this thing, lol... interesting topic though

Supposedly thieves are grabbing the signal and then programming it to a clean key and driving away. Not sure how it all works but that’s what is being reported. All recent thefts have been luxury cars with keyless fobs. Recommendation is to deactivate it or keep keys in a Faraday box (but even then the moment you take it out, the signal is transmitted).

For me it isn’t an inconvenience because the old school way of opening doors and starting the car is all I know. I’d rather do it this way than walk out and not have a truck to start.

The operating range of the key fob is very small, 0.7 meters from the door handle.

There are two procedures you can do, one turns off the smart key functionality temporarily and the other disables it fully.

For temporary, hold the lock button and press the unlock button twice. It will turn on again if you hit any button on the key fob. Here’s a video https://youtu.be/lRUlqVh_wsI

The other method fully disables the smart key system…
Starting in the car, ignition off, doors locked, unlock driver’s door only, hit unlock on the key fob, open driver’s door, hit unlock twice on key fob quickly, close and open driver’s door twice, press unlock twice on key fob, then close-open-close the driver’s door. If done correctly, the car will beep. Same procedure will turn the smart key back on.

I don't like the way the doors lock and unlock constantly when I'm washing my wife's new Toyota. And I really don't want to put the keys somewhere other than my pocket, don't want to forget or have something bad happen to the key fob.

I like how it works on my other car, I need to push a physical button on the door handle to lock or unlock it, it's not a touch sensor like our Toyota.

The operating range is small as mentioned above, but I believe that is a feature of the sensor in the car. The key itself transmits a signal that travels further than that. It can be picked up by a receiver from in front of your house, even up to the sidewalk/ street in some cases. It depends on how strong the criminals receiver is, as I understand it. Once they have the signal from your key, they program a blank & ….ta daa your car thinks it’s you.

Options are a faraday box/bag or turning the key to ‘battery saver’ mode as mentioned above. The key should wake up if you press any button on it, no need to do a fancy unlock sequence ( it does on my RAV4 key anyway) In this mode the key is not transmitting I believe, but you can test it.
Put the key into battery saver, then approach vehicle & grab door handle. It should not unlock. Then press the unlock button and it should come to life and unlock car, maybe with a small delay. Then key works as normal.

Downside of this is you have to remember to put the key to sleep every time after you wake it up.

Also the doors shouldn’t unlock for you unless you grab the door handle ( sensor on inside of handle grip)

the closer you keep your keys to the front of your house the easier it is for them to get the transmitted code from it, as it does have a limited range, but that range may be larger than you think.

    EDIT:
you should know your keys range by manually pressing the lock / unlock buttons. Walk down the street & keep testing to see how far away you are when it stops working. That is a general idea of how far away they can grab your signal if I’m not mistaken.

So sad…can’t even enjoy your creature comforts in peace:

    - Catalytic Converters
    - Gas in your tank
    - the entire car due to a convenient application
    - ???

now depending on where you live should you catch/engage with one of these fools (not that I am recommending it) then you get blamed as the bad guy :der:

I've usually wired in a $10 toggle switch as a "kill switch" in just about every Jeep I've ever owned. It just interrupts the fuel pump and I usually put it in some out of the way place. Worst case scenario is someone trying to steal my Jeep would just run down the battery. lol.

Never thought I would be considering doing the same on a 2022 vehicle. I doubt I'll actually do it since I can only image how much more complicated the wiring is on this truck compared to a late 90's/early 00's Jeep XJ. haha.

You "could" do that to a new Tundra fairly easily, the in-tank fuel pump wire can be intercepted just like on older vehicles.

However, you could cause some serious damage because the Tundra uses the in-tank fuel pump as a low pressure lift pump to feed the high pressure DI pump. I wouldn't want to starve the high pressure pump (which are usually cam driven, not sure about the Tundra) as there could be some damage.

What I've done in the past is use the driver side seatbelt buckle switch to drive a relay that could either kill power to the ECU or trick the ECU into thinking the vehicle is in gear, thereby disallowing the engine to start. Basically, the idea is that crooks don't wear seat belt, and vehicle won't start without seatbelt latched.
