Bought the Tundra used in 2020 with 28k miles and have done a lot to it but want to start documenting everything in one place. We live in SW Colorado so the truck is mainly used for high country camping and desert exploration.

Previous rig was this 5th Gen 4runner but it was getting too small for our family of 4 so...IMG_4247.jpg

    Beautiful rig

I may do a few of these things myself, after seeing your truck!

I read they were deleted beginning in 2018 so being a '17 with a tow package I assumed it has one... but haven't verified that it does. You have experience installing one? Any recommendations?

Oh, I misread "bought in 2020" as "model year 2020". Yours, as model year 2017, have one, nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I have experience reintroducing it with my 19 Tundra and wife's 22 Sequoia. Definitely must do if any offroading is on horizon.

I need to set up my Scangauge x gauges to monitor the trans temps but haven't gotten around to it.

Your 17 should have one. I still added an additional trans cooler. Pretty simple install. If you go that route, source parts on your own. Much cheaper than kit, wish I’d have done that. Nice ride btw.

Got some work done to the Tundra last week:

Total Chaos cam tabs and spindle gussets.

    New LCA bushings.

    Revolution 5.29 gears.

Replaced the TRD engine skid with an RCI.

I cut/folded/hammered the pinch weld but not sure I needed to... seems like plenty of room in that area.

The only rubbing I'm getting is a little on the sway bar at full lock but I haven't been off-road yet. I might pull it off and see how big a difference it makes in normal driving. I'm sure I'll like it off-road.

With the 0 offset wheels I fully expect I'll make contact with the fenders/fender liner when it gets flexed.

Do you use it a lot? If so, are you running in 4hi or 4lo?

What sort of off road capability did you gain with the re gear and locker?

    thanks!

I wouldn’t say I use a lot but it’s nice to have when I want it.

With bigger tires and a heavy rig the re-gear and locker add a lot of capability.

Re-gear probably being the single biggest improvement to keep the truck from getting bogged down in slow, technical terrain. These trucks have an annoying 4lo power/rev limiter that can kick in and lower gears help keep the rpm’s up.

The locker is nice when it’s steep and loose. I can use in 4hi or 4lo.

My 2 previous Toyotas (4Runners) had factory electric locking rear diffs so I wanted it in the Tundra.

The 4lo throttle limiter is exactly what I'm trying to work around. I believe there are ways to "tune" some of it out but it sounds like a regear helps quite a bit with low end grunt. You're one of several people who have confirmed this for me. If you're interested in the conversation I have another thread going about the specifics of that 4lo throttle/torque limit going over here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/disable-4lo-throttle-limit.157515/#post-3903839

Thanks for your input! Sounds like you wheel like I do. I'm not looking to turn the truck into a crawler but it's a dang dog that just flops in 4lo. My next set of tires will probably be 37's so the regear is getting more important, especially with the elevations/gradients we have here in the West. I'll bet your 3.0" Kings are pretty sweet! Kinda wish I would have gone 3.0 vs 2.5, but I can get after it pretty good on the faster stuff.

Do you have any regrets about not putting a locker in the front, as well?

Well I've re-geared 2x and so the window for adding a front locker has come and gone... twice. I just couldn't justify the expense vs. how much I think I'd use it but I know there are trails, circumstances where it would be nice.

Yeah, the throttle thing is lame... never experienced anything like it. Here are a couple of threads that dive into the issue: https://www.tundras.com/threads/unable-to-rev-engine.97463/. https://www.tundras.com/threads/power-loss-offroad.25499/

I have an Overland Tailor tune. They supposedly removed a limit setting in 4lo, 1st gear but I'm not sure it did anything. I've still had issue's after the tune.

Others in the above threads, who have messed around with tuners themselves, seem to have come to the conclusion that the 4lo limiter cannot be tuned out despite the fact that HP Tuners and VF tuners show adjustable parameters that ought to affect the issue.

I would love to hear otherwise.

Ah, there are other threads on this already. I was looking but didnt find it, hence starting that new one. I'll review those for more info, thank you!

Yea, I have the OTT tune as well. I was going to reach out to them and verify if they do, indeed, adjust those 4lo throttle limits specifically. People with more experience seem to validate the fact that even with a tune, the nannies remain (at least to some extent)...which is indeed very lame.

Since I'm not trying to make it a real "crawler" I dont know if it's that bad of a problem. Sounds like the 5.29's and a rear locker are game changers. I just don't want the truck to be such a pussy when it comes to low speed, 4wd obstacle negotiation, you know?

Maybe I'll run into you somewhere out there on the trails! I try to get down to SW CO at least once a year, such a fun place. Like a different state from the front range...
