hi everyone I just picked up a leer shell and was trying to figure out how to wire the lights.
I have never really done any electrical work so decided to come to you all for help.

I did some research into it and the tutorials I watched showed them tapping into the rear brake light for the 3rd brake light.

When I went outside to look at my set up I noticed the third brake light and dome light are ran off the same wire. (1st pic)

#1 do I have to run wires into that connector which is on the top left of that black box where the fuses are (3rd picture)

#2 do I run from the battery? Or tail light? If tail light does this mean I can only use dome light when the tail lights are on?

Thanks ahead of time for the guidance.

My Leer canopy lights have a line run (+12v) all the way back to the battery.

On further inspection the bottom is where I need to run to. It says chassis input. Where do I find this chassis input wire and where do I locate or purchase that connector?

Not sure about where to get the wires, my canopy came with my truck. I think that I have more wires than that coming out of the box. I will try and remember to take a picture when I leave work.

My Leer cap taps the brake light on the drivers side and the running light circuit for dome light. The dome light only works when the lights are on.

My light works with ignition off. Here is the box with the wires.

That bottom connector is running to the battery?

You'll have to go to a Leer or Century dealer to get the harness (chassis input) that plugs into the control box. It should have a brake wire, dome light wire and ground.
Remove your driver's side taillight and tap you brake wire (red) and ground (white with black stripe) there. It's best to solder the connections if you can. Scotch locks, t-taps and posi-taps will corrode over time.
For your dome light, you can tap the taillight wire (green) in the same harness as the brake and ground. If done this way, your taillights will have to be on in order to turn the dome light on. To be able to turn it on at any time without the taillights or key being on, you'll need to run a wire up to the battery. 16 gauge wire is plenty big enough and put a 10 amp in-line fuse at the battery.

The wire on the lwft with the split loom goes to the battery.

I know this thread is old but thought people might want to know an easy option for your camper shell dome light. already had a new shell brake light installed when I first bought the truck. I was informed by installer that my rear dome light was defective. I didn't realize at the time it was just a battery powered unit.
So I actually bought the wired led replacement. $23 with shipping (for sale). After getting it and reading a few forum topics on it, I just took the first one as a loss and bought the battery powered one instead. All I have to do is load some AAA batteries in and screw it back in. Done. In addition you can add these lights anywhere your shell window screws are (or you can drill your own screws).

    For these reasons,
    1. I don't use it enough to have it wired. 2. To do it right you have to wire it to battery with fuse. 3. Don't want all that wiring and sheathing exposed or even semi exposed just for that dome light. 4. If I have to take off the shell, it will need some form of disconnection spot with more wiring exposed. 5. AAA batteries are easily available and fairly cheap. 6. Battery replacement dome light was cheaper at $17 shipped. 7. You can install as many of these battery operated lights along the shell as you want.
