I'm new to Tundras and just learning that their exhaust is loud by nature. On my 2006 with 250K miles, original owner has never done anything to make it more loud or less loud. It has the original muffler since new.

I prefer vehicles that are not loud.....Is there anything I can do to it to significantly reduce the growl?

I'm doing the timing belt (and water pump) rollers for timing belt and cam seals.
I'm also adding running boards and a bed cover and that's it.

Factory exhaust system was Camry quiet on mine. Maybe yours is just worn out?

Thanks Knabores. What is the best place to order the factory exhaust?

Best thing to do is look for someone’s low mile takeoff crowding their storage unit up. A replacement OEM exhaust will be expensive. Make sure you have the resonators and Catalytic converters still in place. Make sure the exhaust exits either the rear or the rear passenger side.

My 2000 is very quiet. If in the South get a new muffler from a wrecking yard. The Rock has stainless resonator pipe and muffler pipe sections for about $90 ea but I have no experience as my OEM exhaust is still solid.

Shoot some pics of your exhaust system and we can see if it’s all still there

I just helped my neighbor replace the frame under his 2006 V-8 4x4 Access cab. He had some crappy duals with a Flowmaster 1 in, 2 out knock off, and it was loud.
We salvaged the exhaust (less cats) from the donor 2002 truck when we got the frame.
His cats were completely plugged up, so we knocked the matrix out, and I combined the two exhaust systems to make up a stock setup.
The exhaust is much quieter, you really dont hear anything at all. So, factory exhaust is very quiet.
As stated, look for a set that has been taken off. as long as it is the same truck setup, you should be fine.

I purchased non-OEM stock replacements for everything after the cats on my truck. I can't remember where I ordered them from, but they were pretty cheap compared to others.

It's nearly silent. I have a slight header tick, but with the windows closed my tires are louder than the actual exhaust, and they're pretty quiet street tires. The stock exhaust is very quiet.

If you have to replace any pipe, make sure you use the stock diameter or you'll lose torque. My exhaust was rusted and had huge holes, and was noticeably faster after the whole system was replaced.

Another thing, if your exhaust system has a lot of rust inside, the particles can really clog up your muffler. That will absolutely kill power and performance.

I thought the 00-04 Tundras had the oversized OEM muffler and that changed for 05-06?

I’m not quite sure but at least my 02 stock is super quiet but that’s because it’s a big ass muff.

The 2001 muffler was a big one, and everything lined up in the 2006. We used the 2006 head pipes, cats, and crossover. Everything past that was 2001 stuff. It all fit right up, and is very quiet.

The larger the muffler, the quieter it can be.

    Yep.
At Toyota, we spent a huge amount of time and energy working on NVH, Noise, Vibration, Harshness.
Exhaust systems are one of the many things that are quite carefully designed to be quiet.

That has definetly not been my experience with an 04 DC LTD.

Bought my OEM parts a few months back after experiencing the Flowmaster for a few years. Chose to go back OEM and have no regrets. Whether expensive or not is in eye of beholder, it's back to original and will good as new for many more years to come. Something my grandson will have to deal with not me.

purchased from my semi-local dealer who matched online prices of McGeorge Toyota....

I bought a Walker resonator assembly and Walker ‘quiet flow’ stainless muffler from Amazon in mid 2019. It was pretty cheap, with new gaskets and clamps not much more than $200 CAD at the time.
I haven’t looked at it very closely recently so I can’t say what condition it’s actually in now, but it was incredibly quiet when new, and is still very quiet- unless you step on it, and honestly I don’t find it to be a very pleasing exhaust sound under heavy load, just kinda loud, but for every day driving it’s been great.

I thought you said the frame was good? Maybe by Jersey standards? The peeling on that first pic is sus.

If you two saw what people drive around up here, you’d understand why that’s actually not so bad.

Structurally, at least from what’s shown, it’s still good.
