So I lost my keys a few weeks ago. After talking with 2 locksmiths and them not showing, I called slim Jim and they said since the ignition has been changed they can't do anything. They also said I'd have to drill it out since I don't have the key. Is there nothing a locksmith can do? Am I seriously gonna have to buy another ignition?

If so, can I just buy it from Toyota, and get a door key from my vin, then take the door key and have the ignition re-keyed to the door?

The other hurdle is the gas door lock. I did buy a replacement from Toyota so maybe they can make a key?

Moral of the story: DON'T LOSE YOUR KEYS.

I am picturing BMF on an episode of cops.

"Why are you driving a truck with a screwdriver in the ignition?"

    "I lost my keys officer"

"I'm gonna need you to step out of the vehicle"

(BMF rolls the window up and logs into tundras.com for proof, pressing his phone against the window)

I just got off the phone with the 4th locksmith. He said he could get a key made so I'm waiting for him to call me back when he's headed that way. Now I'll just have to run by Toyota to get a key for the fuel door before I run out of gas.

It's possible, the other guys just don't know how to do it or don't want to try. You can make a key for anything. If it was one of the "sidewinder" keys like what VW/Audi uses, I sure wouldn't want to, but our Tundra's don't use anything special.

Also, you may ask the locksmith if he can just take a poke at re-barreling the fuel door. It's easy-access, he/she should be able to look at it pretty quick and know if they can pop it apart to access the barrels.

I hope so. I would think they have some kinda tool they stick in there to get the key shape, then cut a key with it. Almost like a reverse lock pick or something.

And this is another popular method. But reality is, most locksmiths want the easy low-hanging fruit and don't want to do this, or don't have the tools and/or knowledge.

It's not easy to find somebody to cut that style but I found a Russian guy who not only cuts them but programs the car to accept the new chip.

When I told him VW says its laser cut and costs $200 he laughed and said "I do for $60, $50 if you give happy yelp" that 8ncluded the programming. Happiest yelp I ever wrote.

That 2nd video I posted has the locksmith not only hand-cutting a standard key, but also showing how to get the car to accept the transponder in the new key as its "own", using an Aukey OBD2 unit. Pretty cool - I'd never seen the process to pair the key transponder, didn't realize it was so easy.

Part of me is happy non of our FGT use transponder keys. The other part of me is thinking about the CAN BUS systems used on some VAG vehicles and needing to manage the programming without VAG-COM or some other VCDS or whatever, special cables ... I'd have that Russian dude's name plastered all over Vortex in a minute to generate him as much biz as possible :D

Yeah, Volkswagen Auto Group didn't do themselves a favor with their acronym.

And also yeah, the 'tex can be super-pitchfork 'n torchy sometimes, and that's unfortunate. I recently reactivated my account there to list my MIL's low-mile Passat CC sine there's so many members from ATL on there. But she got a killer offer on trade-in which didn't make sense to pass up.

Let's just say .. I won't be signing on again any time soon.

I am almost certain I called the dealer and they made my a spare key from my vin. They asked me to bring in my vehicle registration when I picked it up but forgot to verify it once I was there.

In this case, the ignition cylinder has been replaced, so the current cylinder's barrel config no longer matches the original installed at the factory, thus mismatch to VIN.

If you can get a blank key, slip it in, turn hard and fast with vise grips, almost hard enough to twist off the key. At each impact, the tumbler pins will leave a mark on the new blank. Use a triangular file to cut as marked. You will need to repeat the process of bumping it about 40 times hard to get it right, but it can be done with patience and a worn out wrist.

Yes, but only if the ignition barrel is original to the truck. Which in this case, he specifically mentioned it wasn't. Neither is the gas door. IIRC, only his driver, passenger door are original barrels, maybe the tailgate?

I think I was saying (maybe in another thread when he lost his keys) he should pull the ignition and have it re-barreled to whatever the doors were, and do the gas door the same. Get it all back to OEM in case this stupid crap happens again.

Thanks. I had to re-read the thread when I saw earlier you mentioned that to someone else. I would imagine the ignition cylinder can still be made to match the original key. I'm not sure what would limit that other than the experience of the keysmith.

    Exactly.

I had one of my local locksmiths do just that with the locking gas tank for my mid-80s Kawa. Was abandoned w/o key. I filed for new abandonment title to make it mine before overhauling and bobbing it. Ignition assembly was cheaper than a locksmith, so I decided to buy new. Got a nice shiny OEM key with it. Then realized when I went to fill it up ... oops. No key.

So ended up going to the locksmith anyway to have the tank door re-barreled to match the IGN key because I'm a dumbass. She told me, "You know, you could've saved yourself $100 if you would've just brought me the ignition cylinder...."

The guy texted me he was on the way. I got home in about 20 minutes and he already had the key cut. Bummer, I wanted to see how he did it. So now I gotta get a key made for the door and fuel door. Oh and @shifty` , the tailgate is different too. That's 4 keys I'd need to open everything.

Also, Ironman is very grumpy about not running for 3 weeks. I'll post a video in my other post.

    $120 isn't bad.

Hopefully you got two spares while he was there. Use a hide-a-key on the truck and keep one in your house. Can't tell you how many times either has come in handy.

Way back in the day, one of my bandmates had a hidden switch and then a doorbell on the dash. It was comical.
