Hey guys, I’ve got a weird question but when I turn my truck off and sit in it for a few minutes there’s this loud bang the comes from the engine bay, does it very 5–10 minutes. Walked out to my truck this afternoon (it was sitting for probably 2 hours) and I heard the bang again. And ideas for the problem would be awesome thanks!

A loud bang, huh? Sounds like your engine is shot. :rimshot:

Seriously though, that sounds freaking weird. How loud of a bang are we talking here? 12ga? (I doubt it). A clunk like the starter is trying to engage?

it starts off loud then gets quieter, I’ve heard that it could be my cats but not sure.

My papaw's old 2000 cheby 1500 would pop as the exhaust would cool down over time

I have NEVER seen the stock exhaust on a V8 tundra so I don't know what it's supposed to do.

Post up some pics so we can see what you see!

Ok, I'll ask the obvious first:

    Any codes at all?

Have you modified the engine in any way, intake/exhaust, or anything else on the engine to adjust functionality like a SAIP bypass or programming?

No codes and everything with the engine/exhaust is bike stock.

    How many miles?
Have you ever done timing belt?
Have you replaced any worn parts intake/exhaust parts like cats, had the intake manifold off, exhaust manifolds off, replaced the plugs, replaced coil packs, replaced anything?
    How do the plugs look?

It’s got 182,000, timing belt was done about 15,000 miles ago, don’t think anything else have been done.

Nope, only after I turn it off, that’s why I was more leaning towards cats because it’s when the truck is cooling down.

Describe the sound for us. Is it a loud explosion, like a backfire or firework? Or is it more of a pop, like a cork from a champagne bottle? Maybe more of a clang, like heavy metal on metal, like a monkeywrench tapping a framerail? Or more of a ping, like a marble hitting a body panel? You tell us.

If I've been running my truck hard, it's not uncommon to hear pings as the engine cools down.

Maybe put an exhaust pressure guage on it to test for clogged cats. Pretty cheap DIY or muffler shop.

It’s like a monkey wrench hitting the frame rail, sometimes I can feel the larger ones in my feet.

You got me. Throw a camera on it with the hood open so we can all hear what it sounds like. Something like what this guy did would suffice. Note the thud after turning it off, right between the 5s-6s mark.

Have you considered this may be happening because your truck is gold? Pucks' old lady is possibly living under your truck and smacking the framerail with a hammer periodically because she thinks gold looks terrible.

Will do, I’ll take a video as the truck is cooling off from my drive home from work today.

Could your exhaust shields be making noise as he are cooling down? Do they seem loose?

Mine would make a loud bang when I started moving for the first time after it sat a while. It went away when I removed the sway bar.

Hey guys sorry for the late reply got caught up in school and work and forgot about it. I ended up figuring jt out, it was my cats. I took them gf did a usual drive and it didn’t make the noise so I’m all set. Thanks!

I can't stop thinking about this thread now... I've noticed my exhaust shield make a bang noise about 10 or 15 minutes after I turn my truck off. Hadn't noticed it on this truck till after I read this thread.

Cars I've had in the past did it too. Perfectly normal
