    Hi all,

I noticed a couple days ago that my engine has started knocking loud when the truck is idling at a traffic stop etc. I did have the first oil change last week I think, or the week before, so I am not sure if they screwed something up?

Could it be bad gas? I use octane 87 and have since I bought it.

    Thanks,

    -T

Check the oil first. If it’s ok, and knocking is loud, take it back to the stealership.
It could be something serious, and that knocking is causing more damage as you run it.

Drain the cheapo gas, or next fill up, try a tank of Sunoco 93 octane. That’s what is usually in mine.

Probably a case of bad gas? if its still under warranty take it in and have it checked out... highly doubt its knocking, but just like @a522467 stated a tank of premium, or seafoam can help out some...

Have you checked the oil level on the dipstick? Sometimes dealers screw up.

No, I have not checked oil level. Is it best to do that after it has been running for a while or after it has been sitting?

It's more like a loud ticking noise at idle.

Engine off for minimum of five minutes. Hot or cold engine doesn't matter.

    LOL, now you post that...

I had my work husband check the oil and it's fine. I turned the engine on and idled it and no noise, so it seems to be more when the engine warms up. I will see if it does it tomorrow when I am heading home or doing errands.

If it sounds like this then it's most likely the timing chain tensioner. This is my son's truck and the sound is inconsistent. He has taken it to the dealership multiple times and they can never reproduce the sound. I talked with him yesterday and he said that it has not done it in months. Fortunately he has an extended warranty.

This is very nearly the same sound that my truck was making yesterday for a short period while I was waiting in a drive thru line.

These trucks are designed to run on regular gas. If you want to pay for the high octane that's your call.
Adding seafoam is useless also in my opinion, but i'm not getting into that battle.
If your on your first tank, I'd say everything isn't even grown together as of yet.
I would mention it at your free checkup, but i believe they'll tell you it's normal.

you aren't going to get pre-ignition at idle. It likely isn't gasoline related.

The 5.7 is a naturally noisy engine. Shockingly noisy. The 4.0 is also louder than some diesels...

If this happened right after the first oil change I would check the following.

    1. Engine top cover and insulators. Make sure whoever changed the oil somehow didn't remove the insulator material under the top cover of engine. The amount of insulator material in the 5.7 is a really good indicator Toyota knows these engines are loud AF.
    2. Check the oil change invoice for proper oil weight, type, and volume.
    3. Observe oil pressure gauge...if it falls to the low mark you've got big problems.
    4. Check in engine bay and undercarriage for a dropped wrench, tool, etc that might be causing the noise.
    5. Check to see if the skid plate is loose in the case they took it all the way off to change the oil and didn't tighten it.

If the noise continues after doing all that has been suggested, you can temporarily remove the serpentine belt to eliminate fan & pulley noise. This may help you narrow down the source of the noise... don't forget to put the belt back on.

My 2018 is damn silent. Barely ticks. So, I can't see all 5.7 are loud.

If your 5.7 is quiet, there's probably something wrong with it!:rofl:
