MaxMate Tonneau Cover Review: Best cover I’ve ever had

After a year with this cover, I decided that I had enough experience with it in enough conditions to post an opinion.

I purchased the MaxMate bed cover shortly after buying my 2024 Tundra SR5 last Spring. Link: https://a.co/d/7lZQN1H

Why I bought it: I came from two OEM hard covers on precious trucks and had terrible experiences. The hard covers didn’t prevent water from getting into the bed, were difficult to move or remove, got in the way, or blocked my tailgate. So I decided on a soft cover. And given that this one cost
<$200, I figured I’d could buy several of these for the same price as an OEM one if it broke.

After one year, I can safely say that this soft cover blows my other experiences away. It was easy to install and has kept my bed completely dry. It’s actually amazing how well it keeps water out. Thus far, it’s survived a hot summer and one of the snowiest winters we’ve had in years. About 20k miles since last year. It’s light weight, easy to roll up, and it still looks pretty new despite all that mileage on my bed.

Things to watch out for: the cover clips into these two grooves in the back. The grooves are adjustable to make sure it’s not too loose/flapping around. After 3 months, I had the screws holding that lock mechanism get loose. A bit (see: very very tiny amount) of the lightest-strength loctite and the problem never happened again.

10/10, I would buy this again in a heartbeat. And while it’s still looking great, I’ll just buy another in a few years if it does actually manage to break.

What holds it down to the rails?

I had a Truxedo soft tonneau that was held down by velcro on the rails. It last about 2 years before the velcro started to wear out. It blew open on a windy trip thru Wyoming one day, and the tailgate end whipped around and dented the top of my cab.

It's been all hard covers for me, since then.

It locks in the back plus uses Velcro in the middle. You unlock it similar to the hard covers I’ve used in the past - I’ll send a pic next time I’m at the truck. Good to know/something to watch for! But at least for this one, I don’t believe that the Velcro is what actually holds it on there. It functions more to seal from wind/rain.

Good luck with it. I'll never own another cover that uses velcro in any way.

I will admit, however, when the velcro on mine was still in good shape, that cover was more waterproof than any hard cover I've had. It just didn't last long enough for me.

If this is the best cover you’ve had I’m really curious what you’ve had before lol.

I have a soft cover as well & love it. I didn't want a hard cover for reasons mentioned above. As stated, it wasn't very expensive & I can replace it a few times if needed for the price of a hard cover. Just my opinion.
