Hey guys, I'm a tundra fan all the way. I had an 09 DC which I sold and was lucky enough to snag a 22 DC TRD Sport. Before getting it I did see the reviews about how tight the rear seating is but in person its really bad and can't understand why toyota would do that. Plus I haven't seen any improvement in gas mileage either and have a little over 3000 miles, and the thought of having turbos breaking down at some point is worrisome. So I'm thinking of jumping ship and going back to the 5.7 but in a crewmax.

If there is no improvement in gas mileage then what the hell is the point of a twin turbo?
3000 miles should be enough to gauge what your mileage is going to be.
I’m looking forward to seeing if the masses that have bought the 22 are seeing any significant gains over the 5.7 engine. If not, it will be hard for me to seriously consider trading up.

A high strung V6 with 2 turbos vs a big V8 that just lopes down the highway. The V6 will have more problems in the long run. I don't know about the Tundra V6 but way back when Ford made the Romeo engine 4.6 V8 they ran it the equivalent of 200K and tore it down it had less wear than most engines they ever tested. When they did the same tests with the Eco boost they had some turbos failed and shortened the test. This all from memory so my facts may be a bit off. This was documented in on of the industry mags not a consumer magazine.

I don't own a 2022 so I can't comment on the model but in all fairness driving behavior plays a big role in turboed MPGs and a lot of drivers may not realize this.

The real point is more power. There is the same fuel economy with more power which means more efficiency, even if that efficiency is not where you want it. The Tundra didn't need more power.

Toyota just made a dumb decision. They looked at the popularity of Ford and said "We'll have some of that please" and made the same dumb mistake Ford made.

What Toyota, and Ford for that matter, SHOULD have done was just put a small turbo with low boost on the V8 in order to improve efficiency. It would be a mild power increase with a pretty significant MPG increase. All while not pushing the engine harder than it can handle. And With a smaller turbo you wouldn't have to worry about "turbo lag" because the engine itself would have plenty of low end power.

Reason I walked away from the 2022 and bought myself a 2017 5.7 crewmax. I wanted reliability and could care less about mpg.

    Do what works for you

Obviously there are few 22s on lots so now is time to resell - used car resalers have few opportunities to buy and would jump at a chance for a 22 they can either use as click bait for buyers or turn quickly.

I suspect the market for gen 2.5s is at its weakest point right now / between $4 gas and most everyone who swore they wouldn’t do a TT6 and would buy a V8 having bought if they were in the market - now is the time if that’s what you want as there are more on the market now and less competition. Ultimately- the selection will thin out in clean late model/low mileage 2.5s and the selection of 3s will widen quickly.

Well, I can tell you the bank value of my Tundra is higher than I thought it would be. North of $32k. 73k miles. Of course, no add-ons factored in.

The market for these trucks can't be too weak right now.

Instead of waiting for the new one to come down in price, I bought a 21 because I didn't like the new version; paid a penalty for it too.

In the boating world, it is well documented that a naturally aspirated Diesel engine would last about 4x the hours in comparison to the same engine with turbo. Now this does not mean to fear the turbo for my boat engines had turbos with no problems at all. However the same engine without turbos would last much longer before a rebuild is needed.

For sure. But, the OP has had both engines with little difference in MPG. I can only assume he’s driving them about the same.

The dealer offered me a 22 SR5 TRD in place of my 21 SR5 TRD which was held up due to the power steering safety recall/stop sale. I had to wait till March 8th 2022 to get my 21. Glad I waited. My experience so far has been trouble free and worry free operation. It’s up to you, but I’d go for the V-8.

Strange design choice considering other V8s are in the Toyota line up. Most likely the choice for V6 was constrained by some EPA regs or some other standards.

Respectfully disagree. Hard to say definitively without logging his driving behind the wheel of both vehicles. I doubt this is the case since drivers change their inputs based on output. If the vehicle seems less responsive he'll get on it more.

On Reddit, there was also an issue reported with some of the drive settings a few weeks back; for many drivers Eco mode was producing worse numbers under certain driving conditions.

Definitely prefer the looks and the V8 of the 2.5 gen however the interior of the ‘22 is miles ahead of my ‘18! I know I would enjoy driving the ‘22 but I just still love looking at my ‘18 more.

If you decide you're serious and somewhere close to the middle of the country PM me and I might consider trading you for a silver 2019 CM Platinum with 16k miles. I'm still not 100% on the DC but really miss my full size bed.

Truck is more than just an engine. I thought the new 22 road much better, had much better camera system, and more standard options, I don't know if just an engine change is worth giving up all the other improvements.

I would think at this point you’d make money on your ‘22. Might be able to pocket a little cash, or at least finance a substantially smaller part of the new (older) truck.

4.6 is better. More fuel economy while still plenty of power.

I think the difference between the 4.6L and the 5.7L is smaller than the difference between the 3.4TT and the 5.7L. If he’s saying the latter is negligible, then the former probably will be as well.

My ‘05 Tundra had the 4.6L and now after having the 5.7L in my last three Tundras I couldn’t go back and yea I’d say the gas mileage drop off was not even noticeable (maybe lost 1mpg) Getting 16.5mpg now on a regular basis on the highway with stock Michelins and I’m not sure the 4.6L ever got over 17mpg

**keep in mind I don’t drive the speed limit unless you’re a cop**

I have around 24K miles on my 2020 and seriously considered trading up for the ride quality improvement. After reading a lot of reviews regarding the turbo issues and whistling window seals, I decided to upgrade my suspension instead. I like the peace of mind of knowing I don't have rattles/whistles and that I won't break down. (Knock on wood.)
