New to me 2016 Platinum 5.7 2wd. Took it in for oil change today. When asked the tech said no skid plate. Is it possible it came from factory without a plate? Thanks.

New? Not even the cheap plastic one? I thought that was standard on all trucks.

You aren’t missing much, factory skid plate is a joke.

Yep, basically just a splash shield. I thought they all had the engine skid. I bet the previous owner removed to to make oil changes easier.

I mean most vehicles come with a plastic shield so the fact that its metal is better than most. Id rather have it there than not, even if just to help keep road grime and debris from getting in the engine bay. Its obviously not build for taking hits from rocks but i bet it would be better than having nothing at all, it could probably take one good wack from a rock off-road.

I hit a big rock in a creek bed in Tacoma that I thought was just a clump of grass. Glad it was there. It held up well.

Last time I had my oil changed in a shop, my skid plate went missing. I'm not happy about it, but the truck is a pavement princess so I can't make myself pony up $250+ for a new one. Waiting to sneak up on a used one.

My 2014 had a dinky little splash shield.
Probably the same one @Tundra234 mentioned.
I replaced it with a TRD shield..

I want to replace the one on my'17 with the TRD one for that little access panel. I assume they just bolt right up? I have a cat shield too, so I was curious if they all worked together well.

I’ve got a 17, went with RCI plate, got a great deal. I also have Valhalla cat shields, they work great together. I recently got a TRD nut plate from talons garage. Best $35 ever spent.

My cat shields mount in the same holes as the TRD skid plate.
Fortunately, the shield had slots for those bolts, like the Talon shield in the pic..
I just loosened the rear bolts of the skid plate and slid the cat shield underneath it..

My shields are Vahallas, but I not longer recommend them, if I needed shields today, I get them from Talons Garage.

Any particular reason why you decided to change from Valhalla to Talons?

I have Vahallas, I didn't change them, the plates are very similar.
I used to be a big Vahalla supporter, but as a one-man operation, he got in over his head.
His website stated a 4-week runaround, but it was more like 4 months.
Many a shipping promise was not kept and he even stopped answering emails and PMs for awhile.
He also lost his vendor status on the forum.

Talon usually has a decent stock and tries to ship ASAP.
To anyone buying a shield that has a skid plate, I strongly suggest the nut plate.
It makes putting the front bolts of the shield with the rear bolts of the skid plate much easier..

It doesn't look like much, but it is sure a knuckle saver when attaching those bolts..

For those that don't have the factory front skid plate (shield) or thinking of removing it. If you live were they use road salt, the spray from the road makes its way up to the steering shaft and will seize the U joint at the rack end.

To make oil changes easier cut a filter access hole in the plate and make a cover for the hole.

I (think) went with the Desert Eagle Offroad cat shield, since they are local to DFW where I live. I am happy with it. I was definitely wondering how that shield would mount near the cat guard.
I haven't actually looked at the RCI ones, I'll check it out!

By RCI I meant engine / trans skid plate. Same coverage as TRD pro plate. Everything bolted right up. Get the TRD nut plate!!!!
Have Valhalla front and rear cat plates. If buying today I’d get talon plates. Same thing, better service.

If you are looking for an aftermarket front plate, we typically have the best prices for Aluminum or 10 gauge steel. We also have oil door, and cutouts for the oil drain and filter access. We use an easy to install 2 piece install that makes any future repairs easy, but also adds a ton of strength to the break over angle.

Nice. I have a TRD lift w/o sway bar drop brackets. Will the standard skid work or would I still need your Skid Plate with subcategory TRD lift (which is currently unavailable). 2) Will the Cat Shield work with my lift? Thanks

PM me some pictures of your sway bar and brackets and I can tell you for sure.

The transmission skid will work with that lift since it doesn’t change the subframe.

I've got the Talon cat plates and plan to get the engine skid soon. Their cat plates are legit and easy to install. Highly recommend.
