I know Tundra vs Raptor has been discussed many times before. My brother currently has a Ford and is very happy with it. He is moving very close to the southern border and we were discussing bugout vehicles if SHTF. Of course Raptors came up. I’m of the opinion that it’s probably better to buy a used 2nd gen Tundra. Throw 5k in suspension at it and it will probably be on par or better than a first gen Raptor.

Does anyone have direct experience on how a MT Tundra compares to a Raptor? I’m talking 2.5 or 3.0 up front with K37 or U748 in back with triple bypasses

    Thanks

I've never seen the two running side by side over the same terrain. But on paper they would be very close with the tundra being significantly cheaper and more reliable

If it was my money I'd buy the tundra

Yeah, that’s why I’m asking for direct experience. Most of those threads turn into “the Raptor is an unreliable piece of junk” discussion without actually talking about the merits of both.

I’m just looking for a suspension comparison.

I have an MT Tundra. I have never driven in or ridden in a Raptor. So I can't comment on direct comparisons. I just know that Raptor discussions on this board always turn into a shit show with some Raptor fans berating others for not being able to afford them.

for the price of a raptor, I could build a new tundra with SC and full long travel. just sayin...

Longer list than the wife needs to know about....
I have king 2.5 OEMs and some other bits and my buddies 2017 Raptor in the pic.
I will say I'm not quite on par with him yet as far as off road performance, there are things like lockers and such that I still need to add. The raptor has a softer ride on the road and still performs slightly better off road. it really is a very impressive machine. albeit if I put another 10k into my truck itd probably be pretty close. The Raptor has been to the shop for warranty 4 times to my Tundra 1. In a SHTF scenario I'll take reliability over any other feature. so lower cost, reliability, and performance that is close enough for most drivers... I'll keep my Tundra. If money was not a consideration... I'd still take the Tundra (and then throw King long travel, supercharger, gearing, lockers, etc. at it).

Every time a raptor driver sees my truck and gives the nod, I know he has buyers remorse.

OK I'll be that guy... neither for SHTF. I'd make sure I'm storing my fuel properly (stabilized, sealed) and I'd want a carburetor and mechanical point distributor. Probably anything with a Chevy 350 from the 70s back. All that offroad performance doesn't mean much if you cant get the thing to start (or stay running on old/bad gas).

    Totally.

I was just thinking if I needed to go fast in the desert and only had 25k to spend including the vehicle purchase, what’s the best route to take.

25k is a good prerunner budget. Grab a 90s Bronco or F150. Call Solo Motorsports and order a stage 5 full suspension kit. Select some wheels, tires and glass. Install and tear up desert.

If you want to stay with Toyota, a 80s pickup with full total chaos LT is hard to beat. If you want to stay with Tundra, 1st gen is your best bet.

Unfortunately, the Fords will be best bang for the buck. There's a reason the whoop scissors are as highly regarded as they are.

Good suggestion. Should have clarified. A good daily driver that can fit the family and go faster than most other vehicles in the desert without breaking and not spending more than 25k. Thanks for the reply though. I hadn’t thought about going that route. You might be able to do a full LT 1st gen for close to that budget

    Family prerunner = Bronco.

    or build one of these...

I think if i were gonna go SHTF/Korean warfare I'd do a old F100 with a vicious 360ci (maybe blown) scissored out and strapped. The 2nd/3rd gen Tundra is very solid and can out perform a 1st/2nd gen Raptor with the right upgrades (meaning suspension, power, and braking) There's a LOT to be said when comparing the 2 and I like the Raptor (1st gen) most of the Raptor trucks. But this has been discussed MANY times with no conclusion...:p

    Unimog? Mil Surplus HMMV?
personally for a bugout SHTF vehicle i would probably go with a Polaris Razor 4 seater and build the shit out of the engine and suspension , and mod it for a 40 gallon fuel tank. get some NODs and go full tilt MadMAx

You want a vehicle for when the SHTF? It's not a Raptor. You want reliability and the Ford doesn't have that. You want 4 wheel drive and to be nimble. Not the Tundra's strong point.

You want a Toyota FJ40. No EFI to deal with if you get hit with an EMP.

I like the idea of the raptor, if only it was reliable I would buy one. If shit hits the fan, the FJ Cruiser would be my vehicle of choice, second is a landcruiser, after that is a horse cuz it doesn’t run on fuel.
