Expecting to be picking up a new travel trailer in Round Rock on 2/17. We don't have to be back to AZ until 2/25 so were looking to break in the new trailer and make a few stops on the way back.

Any suggestions for places to visit as we head west, ideally staying North of I-10 and South of I-40 ?

Have you visited Carlsbad Caverns or White Sands in NM? Big Bend too, but that's out of the way a bit.

If you decide to head to the Big Bend area, I highly suggest stopping by the Marfa/Alpine area. I haven't visited there since before the recession but I do want to go back. And, it's not exactly west Texas but north of El Paso is Cloudcroft in New Mexico and that was some nice camping we did recently. Was out there last May. I believe I posted some photos of it in the "Who's got dogs" thread, if you're interesting in seeing some of the scenery.

Palo Duro is on my list as well.

There isn’t a damn thing to do in Alpine/Marfa besides that dumb Prada store.

If you're going down there to shop, then I agree. I apologize. I guess I misunderstood the assignment.

I haven't been here yet and don't know if the trails are Tundra/longwheelbase-friendly, but it appears to be on the way by I-10:

I know TMTC's other OHV park (BMRA) in Gilmer has plenty of RV/tent camping, but I don't know what the camping situation is like at EDRA. Just thought I'd mention it as another possible option. Either way, post travel and camping pics once you start the journey west!

I highly recommend Palo Duro. In fact, my profile picture is from there. That and Caprock Canyon are worth the visit. Caprock has the state's roaming Buffalo herd.

I was at Big Bend with the boyscouts few months back. Breathtaking for sure. Since you're in the area do Fort Davis observatory and the scenic drive. Never seen a brighter and beautiful sky in my entire life. Drive from Fort Davis to Balmorhea state park. Palo Duro canyon as well if you're in the Lubbock / Amarillo area. Carlsbad caverns, petrified forest if I remember another boyscouts trip?

Where you at now, in case anyone else wants to chime in about something cool near where you're at or on the way? How's the new rig working out?

Hey all, just got back from this trip. 2300mi round trip from Phoenix to Austin and back.

Here are some of the highlights and a number of pics:

Departed Phoenix on Fri 2/16. Stopped for the night at a roadside motel in Junction, TX. Woke up and headed straight to Round rock, getting to the RV shop (Princess Craft) at 10:30am. Didnt end up getting out of there until about 4p.

From there went up the road to Jim Hogg Park and stayed there for 2 nights getting to know the new trailer.

Next stop was San Angelo State Park for a night.

Next stop was Davis Mountains State park for another night.

Headed up to Carlsbad NM for 2 nights. Did a tour of the caverns there. Having now visited both Kartchner and Carlsbad, Carlsbad was absolutely amazing.
We stayed at the Carlsbad KOA just north of town. At about 2:20am on Friday were were rocked by a 4.0 quake just a few miles from us in Atoka, NM.

Headed north through Cloudcroft NM and then down into White Sands National Park where we visited for a bit before heading to Lordsburg for the night.

From Lordsburg we went up through Safford AZ then home.

Took tons of pics, will post some here but do post our camping adventures on IG @az_pikies. The Tundra handled the trip flawlessly. US 285 from Ft Stockton to Carlsbad was a breeze...tons of semis, high winds and the truck/trailer didn't seem to be bothered one bit.

    Pic dump:

Man that's a long haul. Good looking trailer and doggo! I just drove from Marfa Tx back home home to San Antonio area. I feel your pain and I hope TX treated you right. Fort Davis is really cool and the drive from Ft Stockton to San Antonio is also beautiful.

Much appreciated... We thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

My brother is in Grandbury, SIL in San Antonio and BIL in Austin so we visit regularly. Would like to move there some day.
