    Hello all, I’m new here.
I recently got this one owner, RCLB for towing our horse trailer, moving hay bales and general small ranch work. 106k miles. Our last 2 pickups were new extended-cab Silverado leases, and we NEVER used the back seats. Everything new is crew cab now, so I was happy to find this very capable tow-er with a regular cab and long bed; it’s just perfect for our needs. It has some dings and scrapes, which is fine with me - coming in and out of horse barns, this just seems inevitable.

Since getting it, I have cleaned and rust treated the tow hitch, replaced the rusty & dented rear bumper metal w/ a stock unit, restored the headlight lenses, added Beamtech LEDs to the OEM cans, installed a Redarc trailer brake controller (very happy with this, and an easy install w/ factory pre-wire). Also de-badged and replaced the never used or lowered,13 year old spare tire & rusty wheel with an OEM steel wheel & Bridgestone take-off.

Things to do: protect the surprisingly rust-free underside with a combo of Rustoleum, CRC Rust Inhibitor & Fluid Film - change diff, trans oil/fluids. Maybe update the stock radio with a Car Play capable unit. I miss having a backup camera for trailer hitching and backup safety, so may add that also. Eventually, I’ll do some suspension mods, but I don’t want to raise it or make the ride stiffer if I don’t have to.

I’m really liking this truck. It has a tight feel and is a blast to drive, the controls feel expectedly Japanese, but it has the power and manners of a muscle car. The sport mode column shift is also fun to use. I appreciate any suggestions or tips anyone may have!

Your spare looks just like the one I tossed on my 08 this year. I think I'd rather be on a flat bed than trusting a spare that old!

Yes, agree, and when you are towing horses, you need to be prepared for everything. Of course, you can't flatbed a trailer full of restless horses, or leave 'em on the side of the road. The new spare tire was made in Q3 of 2020, I found most people selling used tires don't know about the production date codes.

First horse trailering trip last weekend, the truck performed beautifully. I was also happy the rear wasn’t sagging after the trailer was loaded up, as seen in the pic.

Nice! It must be a light trailer because I don't see a weight distribution hitch. Just bought an aluminum Jamco 14 ft slant 2 horse with dressing room. It is a heavy aluminum trailer (see my post on another page). I am concerned about tongue weight and will get mine weighed because the Tundra doesn't have much payload capacity. Unlike you, I have an ARE high cap on the back of my Tundra which adds to the weight.

The RCLB also have higher payload than the other versions of the Tundra and I have a heavy shell on mine, lots of tools.a heavy bedslide and when pulling mine has not sagged too much either so far!

The Tandem Axle trailers help for that too.

Yes, and the way the axles are placed matters as well. In a horse trailer, the axles for a slant load are placed as far back as possible, and for a straight load they are about a foot further ahead. This is usually where the horses are standing. But in a slant load, with only one horse, you have the weight about 60% ahead of the first axle. Not ideal if you also have a lot of stuff in the tack area at the front. When that happens there is a lot of weight on the tongue. One solution, in a slant load, is to place the horse in the last stall, right next to the rear door. I will try that too, if it ends up that my tongue weight is too heavy.
