Just thought I'd share my experience removing the spare from my truck after never being removed for 21 years. The hoist mechanism worked great although it looks very rusty, however, separating the wheel from the hoist was difficult due to the amount of rust on both. The hoist was cemented onto the rim so I sprayed PB Blaster and used the pry bar to finally break it free. The rim looks unusable (I wouldn't trust those lug nut holes). With the spare off I now can see the rust on the rear crossmember, I will clean it up and repaint it like I have done with the rest of the surface rust on the frame. I am now looking for a spare rim and tire (maybe CL or Ebay) don't want to spend too much.

Yeah mine hadn't been dropped in probably 20+ years; wasn't necessarily rusted, just really stuck on there. Spare was flat so wanted to get that sorted. Had to lower the line and then beat on that hoist a little bit to get it loose. Sprayed the heck out of the mechanism and line with silicone lubricant and spooled it back up. Spare is in the truck bed for now, holding air but with a valve that leaks it down to around 30 psi. Will remount the spare after I have a chance to replace that valve, then clean, sand and repaint the wheel a nice black.

FYI on car-part.com you can search for wheel types for our trucks (include the 2000-2007 Sequoias), and one of those is the spare, so maybe a junk yard around you has one you can get cheaper than ebay.

I’ve been looking for a 5th wheel to match my trd off-road t4r wheels but nobody wants to sell just one.

When I had my 16 t4r trail I bought a single wheel to match with no tire from someone that went to pro wheels. They sold all 4 individually.

Search that wheel on car-part and if you find one that's crashed all to hell and missing a wheel, those are your best bet since they already only have 3.

I found a matching 18" gx460 wheel that I have on my tundra on ebay. Had minor car wash scratches. May try looking on there.

Oof, you can see the steel is delaminating around the hole there. Not sure how much you'll be able to rescue there, without grinding away the oxidized metal.

The lip is punched in there for a reason, to add rigidity, so you don't want to kill that totally, necessarily.

Took me 2 months to find a method 17' wheel with 0 offset, found on offer up for $100, it's not the same model# but close enough for a spare, than found a never used Spare k02 285/70/17 tire same size 2 weeks later at a Toyota meet for $100

My spare is a method 309 and im running 305nv

How much rust is in the area where that crossmember attaches to the rest of the frame? Not sure if it's been brought up by you before or not but is there any chance your truck is covered under frame recall?

Taking my tire down tomorrow and spraying/working assembly. I did it when I first bought truck 4 years ago but these type need to be lowered once a year and oiled.

I missed the frame recall, but there frame is is in good shape. It had surface rust but we took care of it before it got worse. We would have addressed the crossmember if I would have looked at this earlier.

It's still active for your year. Mine looked good for the most part other than where the spare tire crossmember attached and that qualified it. When they smacked it with a hammer a couple mounting areas crumbled.

I'd check car-part.com to find a good-condition used OEM wheel from a junkyard in your area.
I found an identical wheel to my factory wheels for $50. I had it sandblasted and powered coated to prevent any corrosion or anything from occurring in the future. If you do the same, make sure you get a matching size tire if you're 4wd.

I did check out car-part.com, awesome site. I ended up ordering a used steel rim/tire from ebay. Thanks everyone.

Hopefully, I'm getting new tires tomorrow (including a new spare). Since I've never dropped the spare, I figured this would be a good time to practice and also get a look at things down there and spray some lube. I think it looks pretty good.

I'm glad I did this "test run". It took a minute to figure out what this little adapter piece was for, as the manual didn't mention it.

Time to wire brush that rear proportioning valve. You don’t want those brake line fittings to rust in place.

This is something I was debating about - whether to get a full-size spare or not. Knowing my luck, by the time I get to it, my wheel manufacturer will discontinue the line.

I definitely need to replace my tire, this thing is original to the truck. Maybe I'll just paint the spare to color match my new wheels

I just got a used tire that matched the size of my current tires and put it on a stock starfish wheel. You could always find a 16 (or 17) inch tire that is very close in size to whatever you are running. Don't recall exactly what your plan is but would be a lot cheaper this way.
