Toyota dealer here wants $300 for the OEM extender.

What’s the best after market option, or is the OEM one going to be my best option?

worth noting I have a bed rug on the sides of the truck, in case that interferes with installation of an extender.

I would go with amp research bed extender just as good as toyota and possibly a little cheaper

I got one you can have for cheap. It's an AMP Research and is in like new condition. It came with my truck but it gets in the way with how I use my truck so it's just been sitting under my car port since I bought it. I would let it go for $20.00 plus shipping or if in the area (Santa Barbara) you can come pic it up. Hit me with a PM if interested.

There is a Santa Barbara in Minnesota? I did not know that. No, I'm in the great communist state of Kalifornia. Historically Santa Barbara has always been known as a sort of liberal collage town. It's kind of funny now because it is one of the few places here in California that hasn't gone face first over the cliff that is "woke" politics. We still get taxed to death and it is ridiculously expensive to live here but the weather is nice.

I've always wondered why there isn't a fold-up bed extender built into the tailgate. It would be eezee peezee to design and incorporate with little to no compromise in normal operation.

I had this for a minute years ago. Honestly Don't remember if it was on my 09 Crewmax or 04 Dakota. Don't think they make them anymore. I ended up going to a conventional foldout model but I can't remember why I was not happy with it. May just have not felt that sturdy. That and/ or I decided I wanted the bed divider functionality that you can't get from it.

Nobody else has done anything like this that I've found. I would guess weighing the sweet spot in the market that it's been found that the number of people wanting bed divider functionality is greater than the number of people who want it to take up minimal space unused. Conventional designs come out in a few seconds or can maybe be crammed into the back of the cab in a pinch so the market for this is probably small. For example I keep a bag of my kid's sports gear locked in my bed most of the time that I like to be held right by the tailgate. Doesn't make much sense to bolt an extender to my tailgate then still have to add a divider when I can get one item that does both.

That's a cool design, looks very versatile. My idea was to have the bed extender fold into the tailgate so that it did not protrude into the bed when folded. Ideally, the tailgate would look pretty much the same as it does now and utilize the empty dead space within the current tailgate itself.

I bought the truck at the peak of the Covid fiasco. It's a miracle I was even able to get this one. One of the largest dealers in the San Francisco Bay Area and they had maybe 7 cars on the entire lot, no incoming inventory, no ability to order something, and supply chain problems were decimating the markets.

Funny story for another time. I went out to buy a Tesla Model Y that morning. Came home with a Tundra :)
