Was in need of additional storage. I didn’t really like the idea of taking bed space with an over rail option and wanted to fit my kayak in bed, so an in bed tool box was no go. I purchased some 81mm mortar ammo cans, put some rubber feet on them and attached them through side wall of can to in bed rails. Coated them with rubberized coating. The through wall bolts have neoprene bushings to make water tight and I put hasps on to pad lock them. They are a little tall and narrow, but mostly hold tie downs and tow straps that sit vertically in them well.

Cheaper? Maybe. Less of a hassle? Maybe not

I definitely got the idea from the above mentioned post about locking them. I went with the tall cans like that, so that they would sit on rubber feet that make a nice friction fit so that they do not bounce around hanging from the rail and put extra stress on the mounting points. And because they are narrow, they can also fit behind the wheels wells on sides as well. They do block the in bed lights at that mounting point though.

Nice job! However, I gotta ask...why not underseat storage? To me it's more secure, out of the way, out of the weather, etc. Just want to know your perspective before I start chopping up my rear floor. Thanks in advance!

Have that too, ESP underseat storage bins, all the stuff in that pic is now in the ammo cans, gave me a better place for first aid kit, and daily accessed items in the cab

I didn’t write up or take pics of the process. (I didn’t want evidence if I destroyed the floor of my truck) that said, it was exceptionally easy to install if not a little daunting to cut in to the foam. I used a hawkbill carpet knife for the rigid foam that cut like butter.
